Abstract

Interpolymers are derived from polymerizable mixtures comprising (1) less than 50% but not less than 5% of a conjugated diene, (2) 94.8% to 49.8% of a monoalkenyl monomer copolymerizable with said diene, (3) 0.1 to 10% of an N-alkylolamide of an a ,b -olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid and (4) 0.1 to 10% of an a ,b -olefinically unsaturated acid. The preferred polymer is prepared from butadiene, n-butyl acrylate, N-methylol acrylamide and methacrylic acid. Polymerization may be in an aqueous medium, e.g. emulsion polymerization. Specified emulsifiers are sodium lauryl sulphate, the alkali metal salts of sulphonated petroleum or paraffin oils, the sodium salt of naphthalene sulphonic acid, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, sodium N-octadecyl sulphosuccinimate, organic phosphate esters or their alkali metal salts, lauryl amine hydrochloride, dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, polyether alcohols, fatty alkylolamine condensates and diglycol esters of lauric, oleic and stearic acids. The polymerization pH is preferably 7 to 9. Catalysts specified are hydrogen, benzoyl and caprylyl peroxides, cumene hydroperoxide and sodium, potassium and ammonium persulphates. Inorganic salts and antioxidants, e.g. hindered phenols may be present during polymerization. Post-polymerization emulsifiers may be added to the interpolymer latices produced and the latices may be mixed with latices of polyvinylchloride and vinyl chloride copolymers, butadiene-styrene and butadieneacrylonitrile copolymers, polyethylacrylate or thermosetting resins, e.g. melamine-formaldehyde resins. In Examples (1) and (2) interpolymer latices of the previously specified monomers are produced.ALSO:An aqueous latex of an interpolymer of 5% to less than 50% of a conjugated diene, 94.8% to 49.8% of a monoalkenyl monomer, 0.1 to 10% of an N-alkylolamide of an a ,b -olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid and 0.1 to 10% of an a ,b -olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid is used as a saturant for non-woven fabrics. The preferred interpolymer is of butadiene, n-butyl acrylate, N-methylol acrylamide and methacrylic acid. The latex may be admixed with latices or dispersions of other rubber or plastic materials e.g. polyvinyl chloride and vinyl chloride copolymers, butadiene-styrene or butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, polyethyl acrylate or melamine-formaldehyde resins.
