Abstract
1,045,937. Tobacco pipes. J. SZELIG. Feb. 28, 1964 [March 1, 1963], No. 8532/64. Heading A2M. A smokers pipe camprises a bowl 1 arranged substantially in alignment with, and as an extension of, the stem 2, the mouth of the bowl being directed towards the front of the pipe, a removable partial closure member 18 on the bowl mouth to retain the tobacco, and a removable cleanrod 5 located in a smoke passage channel 3 which passes through the bowl and the stem, the rod 5 having at one end a gripping member for introducing the rod into and out of the channel. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the smoke passage is extended by a duct 21 having openings 23 for the passage of smoke. The member 18 has a skirt 25 which fits over the bowl and which is provided with openings 26 through which the pipe may be filled when the cover is pulled forwardly. The member 18 is also provided with front openings to allow air to enter the bowl and with central strips 27 which serve to scrape the bowl on rotation of the member 18. The cleaning rod 5 is of polygonal cross section so that on rotation it scrapes and cleans the smoke passage. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the bowl comprises an elongated body 28 which is pierced in the centre to form the smoke passage channel, and comprises a sleeve 33 which is slidingly fitted over the body 28, the position of the sleeve on the body determining the volume of the pipe bowl. The sleeve is provided with a cover 34 having air holes 35 therein. A liner 38 may be provided for guiding the sleeve. The smoke passage communicates with the bowl opening via radial slots 37 in the body 28. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the front part of the sleeve terminates in a head having a central hole which has a diameter smaller than the outside diameter of the elongated body so as to prevent tobacco from falling out of the bowl. The front part of the elongated body is screw threaded in such a way that movement of the sleeve along the elongated body causes the inside wall of the sleeve to be cleaned. The cleaning rod is attached to the mouth of the channel adjacent the stem, an auxiliary opening being provided in the end of the stem and communicating with the smoke passage channel to let smoke escape in the smokers mouth, the rod being slightly curved so as to be retained by its own resiliency in the smoke passage channel.
