Abstract
1,045,094. Impregnating permeable materials; bearings; lubricating. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Oct. 21, 1964 [Nov. 4, 1963 (2)], No. 42979/64. Heading F2A. An electrical contact-member for movably engaging with another member in electric contact therewith is lubricated by a dry lubricant comprising NbS 2 , NbSe 2 , TaS 2 or TaSe 2 , or mixtures thereof. An example of such a member is constituted by a carbon or graphite brush 10 (Fig. 1, not shown), engaging with a commutator or slip-ring 20 and provided with a lateral layer 12 of said lubricant. Alternatively, the brush includes particles 16 (Fig. 2, not shown), of one said compounds. The brush may be made of copper whilst the commutator or slip-ring is made of a mixture of copper, or graphite, and said lubricant. The member may be a sliding contact (not shown in the drawings) made of metal, e.g. gold, silver, platinum, copper or alloys thereof, having said lubricant incorporated therewith. Otherwise, said member may be a bearing 32 (Fig. 3, not shown), having a liner 34 comprising, e.g. 25% by weight of TaS 2 in a phenolic resin, or sintered metal, binder. Alternatively, the shaft engaging with the bearing may be provided with a liner 42 (Fig. 5, not shown), comprising 20% by weight of NbSe 2 , or TaSe 2 , in a resin binder. The bearing may be lubricated by particles of NbSe 2 or TaSe 2 suspended in liquid, e.g. oil or water, which is supplied through an aperture 38 (Fig. 4, not shown). Said member may be a ball- or roller-bearing, gears or cams. A carbon brush in accordance with the invention may be made by mixing graphite and/or carbon with 15% by weight of TaSe 2 and 25% by weight of a phenolic resin binder, the mixture being compressed at a pressure of 1000 Ib./in.<SP>2</SP> and temperature between 100‹ C. and 200‹ C. for ¢ hour. The compact is subsequently annealed at a temperature of 800‹ C. for 4 hours in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. a vacuum or argon gas. NbS 2 , TaS 2 or NbSe 2 , or a mixture of TaSe 2 and TaS 2 may be used instead of TaSe 2 , the compact being annealed at an appropriate temperature. Metal halides may be incorporated in the brush after annealing it. Alternatively, the brush may be made from a mixture of 15% by weight of NbS 2 with silver, the mixture being first heated at 300‹ C. at a pressure of 5 mm. Hg. to remove excess sulphur and subsequently compressed at a pressure of 50,000 Ib./in.<SP>2</SP> at a temperature of 100‹ C. The mixture is finally sintered in vacuo or inert atmosphere at a temperature of 750‹ C. for 6 hours. Copper commutator bars or slip-rings, or similar members including metal or alloys, e.g. silver, and particles of said lubricant, may be made by a similar method, for details of which the Specification should be consulted. Molybdenum disulphide may be mixed with the said lubricant.
