Abstract

Cyclohexanone is produced by contacting a mixture comprising vaporous cyclohexane carboxylic acid and molecular oxygen, with a copper containing catalyst at a temperature between 250 DEG and 600 DEG C. The catalyst preferably comprises a mixture of copper and zinc in the form of free metals or their oxides and may also be copper metal, copper chromite, cuprous oxide and cupric oxide. A small amount of cyclohexene and cyclohexanol is formed as a by-product. The gaseous mixture preferably contains 1 to 3 parts by weight of air per part by weight of cyclohexane carboxylic acid vapour and preferably, also, up to 5 parts by weight of steam per part by weight of air. The flow rate of the said gaseous mixture over the catalyst ordinarily varies from 0.2 to 10.0 parts by weight of cyclohexane carboxylic acid per hour per part by weight of catalyst. The process is conveniently carried out in a converter containing the heated catalyst and a preheating section consisting of an inert material such as alumina. The unreacted cyclohexane carboxylic acid may be separated by steam distillation and recycled.
