Abstract

A leather substitute comprises a fibrous web e.g. of rayon staple fibre, a fabric e.g. a plain woven cotton fabric, or a knitted fabric, united to the web by needle punching, the fabric being napped on the side of the fabric opposite to the web, and a polymer coating upon the napped surface the fabric. The fabric may be a flannel or a suede fabric. The polymer coating may be one which has been heat-pressed on the fabric at a temperature above the softening point and below the melting point of the polymer. The leather substitute may be made by uniting the fibrous web e.g. random or carded web, and a fabric, such as woven e.g. plain, twill, satin, or knitted fabric, together by needle punching with barbed needles from the web side thereof, napping the surface of the fabric on the side opposite the web, coating a polymer upon the napped surface of the fabric, and pressing and heating the polymer coating at a temperature above the softening point and below the melting point of the polymer. The napped surface may be sheared before coating with the polymer. The polymer may be a substantially linear polyurethane/urea polymer which is obtained by the reaction of polyalkylene ether glycol or polyester glycol with molar excess of organic polyisocyanate to produce a prepolymer having terminated isocyanate groups and followed by chain extension of the prepolymer with an organic diamine e.g. hydrazine and ethylene diamine, the polymer being coated upon the napped surface and subsequently being pressed and heated from the napped surface side of the fabric at a temperature in the range of 130 DEG C. to 200 DEG C. Another polymer may be obtained by chain extending the reaction product of polyethylene glycol and molar excess of toluene diisocyanate, and having terminated isocyanate groups, with a polyamide prepared by the reaction of E-caprolactam with hexamethylene diamine hydrochloride. Unwoven cloths may be inserted between the fibrous web and fabric.
