Abstract

1,041,068. Selective printers. TELETYPE CORPORATION. Sept. 26, 1963 [Oct. 15, 1962], No. 37887/63. Heading B6F. Letter - spacing mechanism; carriage return mechanism; sound-deadening and shock-absorbing devices.-A carriage decelerating mechanism for a telegraph page printer comprises a dash-pot 10, Fig. 1, mounted on a side plate 149 and into which a plunger 11, mounted on a type head carriage 145 is caused to enter as the carriage completes its return movement the plunger 11 having a cup-shaped member 18, Fig. 2, mounted on a stud 22 for radial frictional displacement, so that, if initially misaligned the dash-pot and plunger can be brought into alignment by the engagement of a chamfered edge portion 13 on the dash-pot 10 with an opposed chamfered edge portion 32 on the plunger 11 thereby permitting proper entry of the plunger within the dash-pot to absorb the shock of the returning carriage. The dash-pot 10 is provided with an exhaust port 15 the size of which may be controlled by a lever 16 which is pivoted on the shank of a locking screw 17. The plunger 11 is provided with a soft rubber disc 20 forced into the member 18, which serves to cushion the shock of the carriage return operation when a carriage return signal is received before the plunger has been withdrawn from the dash-pot. In operation the carriage 145 is moved step-by-step by an endless belt 460 having teeth 461 cooperating with a toothed gear mounted on a shaft 463 which is driven by a ratchet-wheel 466 actuated by a driving pawl 467, which in turn is actuated each time the telegraph printer receives either a character code or a space code combination. The ratchet wheel 466 is retained in its advanced position by a detent pawl 468. The letter-spacing movements serve also to tension a coil-spring 488, passing over a guide roller 491 and whose one end is hooked over a stud 489 mounted on the carriage 145. On receipt by the printer of carriage-return operation code signal a pawl release lever 480 is actuated to disengage the driving pawl 467 and the detent pawl 468, to permit the tensioned coil-spring 488 to return the carriage 145 to its extreme left-hand position. Type carriages; hammer impression arrangements; type-wheel machines; web and strip arrangements.-The carriage 145, which supports a type-wheel 186 and its associated print hammer 293, is moved across the printer to associate the type-wheel 186 with succeeding areas of a web of paper on a platen 271 and guided by guide rollers 151, 155, which are mounted on extensions 153, 156 of the carriage and ride on the guide rod 146.
