Abstract

1,037,191. Nibbling. EXPERIMENTALNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT KUZNECHNO - PRESSOVOGO MASHINO STROENIA - ENIKMASH. Jan. 2, 1964, No. 168/64. Heading B3W. In a method of making a port in a tube, the tube is placed on a die in the form of a mandrel and a single punch performs a plurality of punching operations while the tube is moved in a predetermined manner so that a port of predetermined contour is formed. An apparatus for performing the method comprises a hollow mandrel 2 supported coaxially within a cage 3 by a cantilever rod 4 fixed in bracket 5 on a bed-plate 6. A tube 1 to be punched is fitted over the mandrel and fits inside the cage. A punch press 7, Fig. 2 (not shown), with the cage 3 mounted on it is also fixed to the bed-plate 6, and carries a punch 8 in its slide 9, which is given a reciprocating motion by a toggle mechanism 10 driven by an electric motor and eccentric. A work-holding device is mounted on a carriage 16 and comprises spring-loaded members 17 which are clamped on to the tube by an internally tapered nut member 18. The member 18 is connected to a sleeve 19 rotatably mounted in the carriage and bearing a pinion 22 which meshes with a gear-wheel on a feed shaft 23. The carriage is moved by a feed screw 13. The feed shafts 13 and 23 are rotated by electric step servomotors which drive through hydraulic torque boosters and are controlled by pulses from a blocking oscillator. The flow of pulses is controlled by a gate in a control circuit which is switched by a signal from a photo-electric cell mounted on the eccentric drive shaft, so that movement of the tube occurs only during the idle stroke of the punch. When one port is finished the tube is moved to a fresh position for a further port to be cut and during this movement which is controlled by a programming device the reciprocation of the punch does not stop but the punch and slide are raised to an inoperative position, by removal of a wedge 29 which is between an abutment block 27 of the toggle mechanism and the machine frame. The wedge is retracted by an air cylinder 30 controlled by the programming device. Punchings which fall into the interior are removed by airblast.
