Abstract

Compositions stable against heat, oxygen and light comprise 99.99 to 95% by weight of a polycondensation product containing carboxylic amide groups in the chain and 0.01 to 5% of a compound containing at least one catechol methylene ether group in the molecule and which is not a Schiff's base, a Schiff's base selectively hydrogenated on the azomethine group, a bis styrylbenzene or a stilbene. Specified polycondensates are polyamides, e.g. from hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid or from lactams such as pyrrolidone, piperidone, caprolactam, caprylolactam, dodecylolactam or undecylolactam, polyurethanes and polyureas. The majority of the stabilizers conform to the formula <FORM:1036414/C3/1> where R1, R2 and R3 are H or substituent group but compounds containing two or more catechol methylene ether groups may also be used. In the specific example polycaprolactam is stabilized with 3,4-methylenedioxybenzoic acid; 3-phenyl-2-(31,41-methylenedioxyphenyl) -thiazolidone-4; and 3-(41-N-phenylaminophenyl)-2 -2 (311,411-methylenedioxyphenyl)-thiazolidone-4. Other stabilizers mentioned are: p-xylylene glycol-bis-(3,4-methylenedioxybenzyl ether); alpha-beta-bis-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)-ethane; 2,5-dimethoxy-3,4-methylenedioxyphenylglyoxylic acid; 2,5-dimethoxy-3,4-methylenedioxyacetophenone; N-ethyl-3,4-methylenedioxybenzylamine; 3,4-methylenedioxyaniline; 3,4-methylenedioxyacetanilide; 6-acetoamino-3,4-methylenedioxy-1-propylbenzene; 3,4-methylenedioxybenzyl alcohol; methyl-3,4-methylene dihydroxy cinnamate; 6,7-methylenedioxy-3,4-dihydroisocoumarin; 3,4-methylenedioxyphthalic anhydride; 7-hydroxy -3-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)-chromone; 2,3:6,7-bismethylenedioxy-9,10-dihydroanthracene piperonaldibutylacetal; 3,4-methylenedioxyacetophenone; 3,4-methylenedioxyphenylacetone; piperonaldiphenylmercaptal; 5,6-methylenedioxyhydrindone-1; 3,4-methylenedioxyphenylacetic acid; gamma-piperonylbutyric acid; ethyl 3,4-methylenedioxybenzoate; 3,4-methylenedioxybenzonitrile; 3,4-methylenedioxybenzamide; ethyl piperate; 2-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)-benzimidazole; and 6,7-methylenedioxyhydroisocarbostyryl.
