Abstract
1,034,316. Centrifugal distilling apparatus. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO., Ltd., and W. L. THOMAS. April 14, 1964 [May 7, 1963], No. 17968/63. Heading B1B. Liquid enters a distilling column at H, passes to the centre of a pair of plates A and B beneath H, the upper plate B being stationary and mounted on the column casing and the lower plate A being mounted on a rotating shaft G, and the liquid then moves by centrifugal action to the periphery of the rotating plate A along a tortuous path between alternating rings D and E on the plates. It then descends to the top of the next lower plate B and runs towards centre of column on to the next rotary plate, and so on down to column base. The liquid is heated at the column base and the vapour formed passes up the column back through the tortuous paths where it contacts the descending liquid and strips it of its more volatile components. Above the inlet H the ascending vapour contacts descending reflux from line J, and is removed via line T to a condenser. The plates preferably are between 15 degrees and 85 degrees to the horizontal and from 5 inches to 5 feet in diameter. The rings on each plate are separated by a distance which increases towards the centre of the plate or that the area enclosed between any two consecutive rings is the same. Radial vanes C on the underside of each rotary plate permit low pressure differential in the column. Less volatile components are recovered via line K.
