Abstract

1,034,032. Heat-setting stretched polyvinyl chloride film. TOYO RAYON KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Jan. 15, 1964, No. 1870/64. Heading B5B. A film which consists of polyvinyl chloride or of a polymer consisting chiefly of polyvinyl chloride, and which has been formed by melt extrusion or by calendering, is stretched at a temperature above its heat distortion tempera. ture but below its melting point in either the longitudinal or the transverse direction or in both directions at a stretch ratio of not less than 2 in at least one of the directions, then heat-set under tension at a temperature within the range of from the " Critical Breaking Temperature " of the film to a temperature 20‹ C. lower than the C.B.T. and preferably at a temperature within the range of from 1‹ or 2‹ C. below and 10‹ C. below the C.B.T., followed by a second heat-setting step in which the film is relaxed in either of or both the directions to an extent within the range from 1 to 20%, at a temperature within the range of from 70‹ C. to the C.B.T. The C.B.T. is determined by holding a piece of the film in a frame in such a manner that the film is prevented from shrinking, and placing the frame in a hot air oven the temperature of which is raised at the rate of 2‹ C. per minute starting at 50‹ C. The C.B.T. is the temperature at which the film breaks. In the first heat-setting step the film is held under sufficient tension to prevent it from shrinking. In an example, a P.V.C. film meltextruded at 200‹ C. is stretched at a stretch ratio of 2À2 in the longitudinal direction at 90-95‹ C. by means of nip rolls and stretched at a stretch ratio of 2À2 in the transverse direction by means of a tenter. The critical breaking temperature of this biaxially stretched film is 134‹ C. and part of the film is heat-set under tension for 17 seconds at 130‹ C. by means of a tenter. Another part of the film is heat-set in a continuous manner under tension for 17 seconds at 130‹ C. using a continuous heat-setting apparatus comprising a set of closely spaced rolls. The portion of the film heat-set under tension at 130‹ C. using a tenter is heat set while being allowed to relax 1 to 20% at 100‹ C. and 130‹ C.
