Abstract
103,334. Correll, P. E. Jan. 22, 1916. Vehicular lanterns.-An automobile or like head-lamp is provided with a reflector consisting of an upper and a lower concave reflecting-surface, each being a portion of a conicoid of revolution, but of unequal eccentricities, and arranged so that one serves to illuminate the roadway at a distance, whilst the other gives a broad distribution of light immediately in front of the vehicle. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the upper part A is ellipsoidal (or spherical, as the limit of the ellipsoidal form), and the part B is paraboloidal, the axes and foci of the two parts being coincident. The filament of an incandescent electric lamp employed is a helix of very small diameter, constituting substantially a small " line source " of light, which is set in alinement with the axes of the reflectors, and with its front end coincident with their coincident foci. In a modification, the upper part of the reflector is paraboloidal, and the lower part hyperboloidal; in this case, the rear end of the lamp filament is located at the focus of the paraboloid. The lamp is secured by any suitable means to the reflector, in a hole which is made somewhat larger than the diameter of the bulb, so as to avoid reflection on to and from the bulb; direct rays may also be suppressed by rendering the front of the bulb opaque, for example, by black paint; and to avoid interference, the supporting wires of the filament are set to lie substantially in the plane about which the two parts of the reflector are positioned.
