In a time clock a single straight line of time printing elements 52 (Fig. 2, not shown) is advanced by a clock mechanism and prints two times in offset positions on a card inserted in a guide 32 at different times but in the same position within the guide by different positioning of the guide relative to the printing elements. In a first embodiment the carrier 32 is moved towards the printing elements 52 by operation of one of two levers 28 representing " in " and " out " times for workmen. Depression of a lever 28 rotates lever plates 66 of which one includes teeth co-operating with a pawl to provide a full stroke mechanism and rotation of the lever plates and a shaft 70 cause an upward movement of a printing roller 78 within slots 82 and swings the guide 32 towards the printing elements 82. A hammer 84 continues movement after the guide 32 has stopped swing- ing towards the printing elements in order to provide a sharp impression of the card against the indicium. A lower elapsed time mark is simultaneously printed with the first impression and indicates the time between the two impressions by its position against the second printed scale, the time of printing being indicated by the point at which a line on the card crosses the printed scale. Depression of the second lever 28 causes the guide 32 to be raised through linkages as it swings towards the indicium. Marks on the card indicate the point to which the card is to be inserted and these are successively obliterated by an inked felt at each operation of the apparatus. Operation of a lever rings a bell. In a second embodiment (Fig. 9, not shown) the guide is held stationary and the printing is performed solely by the swinging hammer. The card is correctly positioned by a pin co-operating with the lowermost of a series of holes punched in the card. A further hole is punched at each operation in one of two opposed positions alternatively, corresponding to " in " and " out " times for the workman. The printing member is advanced by a timer motor and returned under control of a spring after a 12-hour period whereat a cam disengages a driving latch-tooth and permits the member to run back (Figs. 12, 13, not shown). After each reciprocation of the printing member corresponding to ] 2-hour periods a date wheel indicating A.M. or P.M. and the day of the week is notated one position (Fig. 11, not shown).
