Abstract

1,025,962. Radiology apparatus. ALDERSON RESEARCH LABORATORIES Inc. Dec. 13, 1962, No. 47095/62. Heading H5R. [Also in Division G5] A phantom in the form of a human body comprises a human skeleton surrounded by plastic material having the same average atomic number and specific gravity as human soft tissues so that the phantom simulates the radiation absorption characteristics of a human body. The plastic used is preferably deaerated isocyanate rubber loaded with a quantity of "micro-balloons" made from phenolic resin to control the specific gravity and with a quantity of antimony trioxide to control the atomic number. A large quantity of phenolic "micro-balloons" in an epoxy resin may be moulded separately into the shape of a human lung and placed in the appropriate place in the phantom. The completed phantom is sliced transversely at approximately one inch intervals, and the exposed surfaces brought to a smooth finish. Instrumentation of the phantom may be accomplished by placing X-ray film between the sections or ionization chambers may be accommodated in holes drilled in the sections.
