Abstract

The invention comprises dibenzazepine derivatives of the formula <FORM:1024021/C2/1> wherein X and Y independently of each other represent hydrogen or chlorine atoms, Z represents a straight or branched chain alkylene radical having 2 to 4 carbon atoms, R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1-4 alkyl radical and R2 represents a C1-4 alkyl radical, and pharmaceutically - acceptable, water - soluble, acid-addition salts thereof. The compounds and their acid-addition salts are prepared by reducing a compound of the formula <FORM:1024021/C2/2> and, if desired, converting the free base obtained into a salt with an inorganic or organic salt. The reduction may be carried out by means of a complex hydride, e.g. lithium aluminium hydride, in the presence of diethyl ether, dibutyl ether, tetrahydrofuran or dioxan as solvent, or sodium borohydride in methanol as solvent. The reduction may also be carried out by means of catalytically activated hydrogen, e.g. Raney nickel or palladium. Pharmaceutical compositions having reserpine - antagonistic, serotonin - antagonistic and cholin-antagonistic activity for oral or parenteral administration comprise a compound of the invention together with a carrier. The compositions may be in the form of aqueous solutions of the salts. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 943,275.
