Abstract

1,023,010. Testing rubber. TRELLEBORGS GUMMIFABRIKS A.B. April 23, 1964, No. 16940/64. Heading G1S. In a method of testing rubber, the test specimen 10 formed with projections 10, 11 is stretched by a predetermined force, and, subsequently, a photo-cell detector device 50, 51 is moved past the stretched specimen so that as each projection is traversed by the photo-cell device a signal is generated which controls a visual indicating means, e.g. a dial indicator 66, 67. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 the specimen 10 is held between clamps 13, 14, clamp 14 being mounted on a movable bar 15, loaded by a weight 20. In operation, pressure fluid is supplied to a cylinder 29 to move the bar 15, through means 24-28 so that, when a balance is achieved between bar 15 and weight 20 the displacement of the bar 15 ceases. A switch 37 (not shown) is actuated by simultaneous movement of a bar 38 to start the drive mechanism 58 of the measuring apparatus in which a pressure cylinder 57 moves the photo-cell device 50, 51 of throughgear and rack means 52-56. As the photo-cell device passes the projections 11,12 the signals generated are relayed to the dial indicator 66, 67. Circuits for relaying the signals are described with reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings (not shown). In an alternative arrangement, the dial indicator 66, 67 is replaced by an apertured disc 140 (see Fig. 5, not shown), and the measurements are recorded in terms of counted pulses from a photo-cell device 142,143. The weight 20 of the stretching apparatus may consist of a number of weights 20a, 20b &c. adapted to the stretchability of the test specimen 10. The weights are individually moved by gripping seams 150 (not shown) actuable by photo-cell control means. There is also disclosed apparatus and circuitry suitable for semi-automatic testing, in which the loading and resultant elongation of the specimen are automatically printed on a data card.
