Tobacco bales are lossened or opened by feeding the tobacco along a path including members which move along the path and are set in vibration by the passage of the tobacco. As shown in Fig. 1, two opening drums 1 and 11 are provided which comprise a common casing 12 in the two end walls 13 and 14 of which bearings 15 and 16 are fastened in which are rotatably supported the spindles 21 and 31 for rotors 2 and 3. The rotors comprise discs, as 32 and 33, fastened to the spindles, and between which are provided loosely mounted bodies 4, paddles 5 and spindles 6. The members 4, 5 and 6 are provided in the ratio of 7:6:5 and on concentric circles of decreasing radius. The spindles 21 and 31 are driven by a chain 71 from a motor 75. An entry duct 17 is provided on the drum 1 and a take-off duct 18 on the drum 11. The bodies 4 comprise spindles 41 on each of which a rubber tube 42 or an internal diameter greater than the external diameter of the spindle is mounted. A further tube 43, of greater internal diameter than the external diameter of the tube 42, is fitted on the tube 42. The paddles 5 each comprise a paddle bar 51 on a spindle 52 and a tube 53 drawn over the bar 51. The spindles 6 are each fitted with rubber tubes 61. The drums are provided with triangular fins 91 and the space between the drums 1 and 11 has a V-shaped guide plate 92 and a stripper rail 93. A stripper rail 94 is provided adjacent the take-off duct 18. Loosening of the tobacco is effected by the motion of the elements 4, 5 and 6, the fins 91 and the air turbulence created within the drums. Several opening drums, either single units or the double units shown in Fig. 1, may be employed in series to form an opening plant (Fig. 6, not shown).
