In sorting postal mail pre-magnetized sorting- code elements 6 are attached at one stage a (Fig. 2) to the letters 5 to be sorted, and at a subsequent stage b are scanned by electromagnetic means 9, 10, in which they induce currents that are used in control of the arrangement. As shown, elements 6 are embossed on the letters 5 by a mechanism 4 which stamps the elements 6 from a magnetic tape 2. The latter may be magnetized by a magnet 7 or may be pre-magnetized during manufacture (Fig. 1, not shown). The lines of force lie in the plane of the tape and are parallel to the direction of tape transport. Alternatively the lines of force may be perpendicular to the transport direction. In a further modification the lines of force are disposed at right angles to the plane of the tape. In the latter arrangement pre-magnetized articles in the letter are less likely to cause disturbances in the scanning process.
