Abstract

The tear strength of a film of e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polythene, and polyvinylidene chloride is improved by perforating with hot needles to form holes covering from 5-50% of the area of the sheet. The surface of the film may be raised by shaping the points of the needles. The needles may be heated at their base or by frictional heat alone. The holes are of curvilinear shape and may be circular or oval. The perforated films may be united by fusion or with an adhesive to each other or to other fabric layers, coated with foamed polyurethane or calendered, embossed, corrugated or provided by abrasion with a matt surface.
