Abstract

A diagnostic toilet paper, in the form of a roll or of separate sheets, includes at least one reagent capable of visual change in response to one or more substances of pathological origin contained in animal or human excrement. It is stated that two or more reagents may be incorporated into a single sheet in the form of bands or successive perforated sheets of a roll may contain different reagents. The following reagents are described in detail: (a) bromocresol blue and phenol red alone and in combination; (b) ferric chloride with tartaric, citric or EDTA; (c) p-nitrobenzene diazonium p-toluene sulphonate with sulphosalicylic acid, sodium borate and a soluble gum; (c) nitroprusside, ammonium sulphate and sodium carbonate (suspended in polyvinyl alcohol); (c) nitroprusside, EDTA and sodium hydrogen phosphate or tartrate; (d) salicyl aldehyde and sodium hydroxide; (e) glucose oxidase (which may contain catalase), horseradish peroxidase, o-tolidine, acetic acid and tartrazine or FDC yellow No. 5; (f) potassium salt of tetrabromophenolphthalein ethyl ester and citric acid; (g) o-tolidine, barium peroxide, and citric, tartaric or sulphosalicylic acid, using shellac or other spirit-soluble gum to cause the insoluble barium peroxide to adhere. Other compositions mentioned comprise: (a) galactose oxidase, o-tolidine and peroxidase; (b) p-nitrophenol, litmus, agolitonin, or mixed methyl red/methylene blue indicators; and (c) gum guaiac/barium peroxide, and gum guaiac, o-phenylene diamine, leucomalachite green and guaiaconic acid may be used in place of o-tolidine in compositions of type (e).
