Abstract
1,016,446. Twisting. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. Nov. 20, 1963 [Nov. 21, 1962, No. 43975/62. Heading B3E. . A method of imparting helical lay to a straight sectoral conductor in which the conductor is drawn from one to the other of a drum 2 mounted for rotation on a cradle 1 being rotated in a plane containing the axis of the drum, and a device such as a capstan 4 which engages the conductor so as to prevent rotation thereof in a plane at right-angles to the conductor axis. The drum 2 is mounted on a gear-driven rotatable cradle 1 mounted on supports 7, 9 and a hollow guide-shaft 8 which supports one end of the cradle 1 and a fitting 11. A pair of adjustable rollers 5 define an aperture corresponding to the cross-section of the conductor. In use the conductor 3 is drawn from the drum and through the guide-shaft 8 and rollers 5 by the capstan wheel 4 whilst the cradle 1 is rotated. The engagement of the conductor with the capstan prevents rotation of the former about its axis and the drawing thereof by the cradle ends as the conductor emerges from the rollers 5. In a modification the drum is provided with a driving and traversing mechanism, and the conductor is fed in the reverse direction to be wound. The conductor may be subsequently fed to a plastics extrusion or paper lapping insulating machine.
