Abstract

The invention comprises: (1) the compounds of the general formula <FORM:1015784/C2/1> wherein R is alkyl, aralkyl, aminoalkyl (including N-substituted aminoalkyl) or hydroxyalkyl (including polyhydroxyalkyl) and each of R1, R2, W and X is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy, or alkylthio group and the preparation thereof by alkylating the corresponding 10-unsubstituted-1,3-diazaphenothiazine, and (2) the compounds of the general formula <FORM:1015784/C2/2> wherein R, R1 and R2 are as defined above, Y is a hydrogen atom, a C1- 4-alkyl, hydroxy, amino, substituted amino (alkylamino, dialkylamino, dialkylaminoalkylamino, 1-pyrrolidyl, 1-piperidyl, 4-morpholinyl or 4-alkyl-1-piperazinyl) group, Z is a hydroxy, mercapto, amino, or substituted amino group (as defined in Y) and B is a hydroxy, amino or substituted amino group and the preparation thereof by ring closure of a compound of the general formula <FORM:1015784/C2/3> Pharmaceutical compositions, having anti-bacterial activity, comprise the 10-substituted 1,3-diazaphenothiazines of the invention. The compositions may be formulated as tablets, capsules, cachets, ampoules, suppositories, powders, granules, solutions, suspensions, emulsions and ointments.
