Abstract

1,015,538. Letter sheets or cards. J. H. HAYES. Jan. 16, 1964 [June 20, 1963], No. 2080/64. Heading B6A. A letter sheet or card has top, middle, and bottom panels 2 ... 4, Fig. 1, foldable along scored lines 5, 6 so as to position the panel 3 between the other two, the panel 3 having cutout areas 13 to permit contact of the side marginal edges of the outside panels, and the marginal edges of at least one outside panel having adhesive 7 thereon whereby it can be adhered to the contacting parts of the side edges of the other outside panel. With this construction, the address and message can be typed without it being necessary to turn over the sheet. In the form shown in Fig. 1, adhesive 8 is also provided on the bottom edge of the panel 4 so that the sheet can be completely sealed. The adhesive 7 may be in continuous strips or may be in spots, and in the latter case the cutouts 13 may be holes in the panel 3. Selfadhesive strips or spots may be provided on both side margins which are to be attached to one another. A construction (Figs. 7-9) similar to that of Fig. 1, has a sheet attached to the lower edge of panel 4, which sheet can be used as additional space for the message or for making a carbon copy by folding it under the main sheet and interposing a carbon sheet. The width of the additional sheet is equal to the width of panel 3 between the cut-outs 13 so that it does not interfere with the attachment of the side margins of panels 2, 4. An arrangement, Fig. 10, for providing a sealable reply sheet comprises a main sheet 60 with panels 64 . . . 66 and a reply sheet 61 with panels 75 ... 77, the two sheets being joined by a line of perforations 59. Adjacent to the perforations 59 are perforations 72 in the panel 66 enclosing an adhesive area 71. Adhesive strips 68 are provided on the upper face of side margins of panel 66 and on the lower face of side margins 69, 78 of panels 64, 75, the margins 69, 78 being connected to their main panels by lines of perforations 70 and score lines 79, respectively. The composite sheet is first folded about line 59 and then fan-folded about lines 62, 63, 73, 74 so that the faces shown in Fig. 10, of panels 64, 75, are outermost. The folded sheet is sealed by adhesion of areas 68, 69 to one another and by adhesion of area 71 to the top of panel 65, the adhesive margin 78 not being used. When the letter sheet is received, it can be opened and the reply sheet detached by tearing along lines 59, 70, 72. For the reply, the sheet 61 is folded along lines 73, 74 and sealed by flaps 78. An embodiment, Fig. 17, providing for complete closure on all four sides, includes the three panels 92 . . . 94 with cut-outs 97 in the centre panel 93. The margins of the panels 92, 94 are separated from the panels proper by lines of perforations 99, 100, 101 and 103. The back face of panel 92 has adhesive 98, 102 along its margins as shown, and the front face of panel 94 has adhesive 104 along its lower margin. Along the score line 96 joining panels 93, 94 is a paper strip 105, one part 107 of which is stuck to panel 94 and the other part 106 is free, the two parts being separated by a line of perforations 108. After folding as already described, the margin 104 is stuck to the top edge of panel 93, the free part 106 of strip is stuck to margin 102 and the margins 98 are stuck to the side margins of panel 94. Opening is effected by tearing along the perforated lines. In a modification, Fig. 20, of this arrangement, an additional central panel 115 is separated from the bottom panel 111 by a perforated line 113 parallel to which is another perforated line 124, these two lines enclosing an adhesive area 123. The margins of panel 111 have no adhesive. After fan-folding along scored lines 112, 116 and perforated line 113, the side and end margins of panels 110, 111 are adhered, and the adhesive area 123 is attached to the top edge of panel 114. The upper and lower margins respectively of the top and bottom panels, after fan folding, may extend beyond the sheet proper and be folded over to seal the sheet (Figs. 27 . . . 29) or, if not folded over (Figs. 30, 31), to prevent severance of the sheet at the fold line if an automatic opening device is used. A series of letter sheets as described may be made in a web (Fig. 19), with a line of perforations separating successive sheets.
