Abstract
1,014,995. Electromedical apparatus. SIEMENS-REINIGER-WERKE A.G. Nov. 28, 1962 [Nov. 29,1961], No. 45049/62. Heading A5R. In high-frequency surgical apparatus in which flow of protective gas is maintained around the active electrode, a sensitive electrical element positioned in the gas stream ensures that there is no output from the H.F. generator unless the gas is flowing. In one form, the operation of the apparatus is initiated by depressing a foot switch 1 which energizes a relay A and thereby opens an electromagnetic valve 5 to allow gas to flow from a cylinder 7 to the operating handpiece 10. It also passes current through a resistor 20 having a negative temperature coefficient so as to impose a delay on the energization of a relay B which, at contact b 1 prepares a circuit for energizing the oscillation generator 17. The handpiece 10 incorporates a negative temperature coefficient resistor 12, through which current is flowing from a source such as 24, and the cooling caused by the flow of gas causes its resistance to increase and raise the potential of the lower junction of resistor 25 sufficiently to trigger a monostable circuit 13 and energize a relay C which completes the control circuit of the generator 17. If the gas supply fails, the resistance of resistor 12 decreases, the circuit 13 returns to normal and the oscillation generator 17 is cut off. It a fault, such as breakage or damage, occurs in the circuit including the resistor 12 the full voltage of the source 24 is then impressed on the input of a low-sensitivity amplifier 14 which thereupon energizes a relay D to interrupt the circuit of relay B and cut off the oscillation generator.
