Abstract
Acrylonitrile is stirred with alkali in an electrolytic cell without a diaphragm at below 5 DEG C. and preferably at 0 to -2 DEG C., forming adipyl dinitrile and propionyl nitrile. Sodium hydroxide of 0.7-1.2 N is used in which the acrylonitrile may be emulsified. With a cadmium cathode the product is mainly propionyl nitrile; an iron cathode produces 80% of propionyl nitrile; a graphite cathode produces 70-80% adipyl nitrile, all at C.D. of 100-200 A.S.M.
