Abstract

1,012,698. Slicing pineapples &c. HONOLULU IRON WORKS CO. June 8, 1964, No. 23646/64. Heading A4C. Pineapples or other soft articles to be sliced, are delivered from a belt conveyer 16 into a sleeve 7, wherein they are engaged by a pair of feed worms 11 extending through diametrically opposed slots 9 in the sleeve 7 and continuously advanced to a rotary knife 4 to be cut transversely a single slice at a time. The precored and cylindrically cut pineapples are fed via a shoot 29 from a moving belt 28 on a trimming table 2 to the belt conveyer 16 which has a cylindrically grooved outer surface 30 aligned with the feed end 15 of the sleeve 7. The belt 16 extends into a longitudinal slot 14 in the lower surface of the sleeve 7 whereby the pineapples are centred in the sleeve 7 and carried to the counter-rotating feed worms 11. The knife 4 passes through a gap 36 formed between the discharge end 10 of the sleeve 7 and the adjacent end 34 of an aligned discharge sleeve 35 having an associated belt 38 which carries away cut slices. The feed devices and knife 4 are synchronized so that the continuously moving pineapple is advanced one slice thickness for each rotation of the knife 4. A plurality of circumferentially spaced knives may be employed and these may also be spaced axially of the sleeve 7 which would be provided with further gaps 36. Normally open micro-switches 23, 27 are arranged in parallel in the drive motor 18 circuit whereby engagement of a pineapple on the belt 16 with the first switch 23 starts the motor 18 after a predetermined time delay and the passing of the last pineapple beyond the second switch 27 causes the motor 18 to stop.
