Abstract

1,011,894. Pistons. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. May 15, 1964 [Feb. 18, 1963], No. 6531/63. Heading F2T. In a piston and bearing ring assembly for a gas compressor or expansion engine and comprising a bearing ring housed in an annular recess in the piston, passage of gas past the bearing ring is facilitated in use by one or more transverse grooves which are provided in either the bearing ring or the said recess. The bearing ring may be of carbon, graphite or P.T.F.E. In an example a piston has three graphite bearing rings each of which is formed in halves and having four grooves traversing its outer face. In a modification, the bearing rings are ungrooved but a flow path is provided around each ring by communicating grooves cut in the bottom and sides of each ring recess.
