Abstract

101,162. Hughes, H. R. Dec. 7, 1915, [Convention date]. Ordnance for subterranean discharge.-Consists in destroying military trenches by boring one or more holes to a distant point, then forcing through the holes by fluid pressure an explosive or a gas contained in casings. As shown in Fig. 1, several holes 4 are drilled radially from a pit 3 to an enemy trench 1 by a machine provided with a hollow drill stem 9 and a pump 17. The stem is fitted with a drill, and the excavated material is forced out around the stem by water supplied through the stem; a metal liner 16 may be put in the mouth of the hole to prevent erosion. The holes are taken to the surface in front of the enemy trench and the casings shoot out at that end as from guns, and are exploded by time or percussion fuses.
