Abstract

A composition for imparting flame resistance to natural and synthetic rubbers comprises (1) between 17.5 and 45.5 parts inclusive of aluminium trihydrate, (2) between 10 and 15 parts inclusive of a chlorinated wax, (3) between 5 and 15 parts inclusive of antimony trioxide or an equivalent antimony compound, and (4) between 10 and 15 parts of a phosphate ester. Specified rubbers are ethylene-propylene, polyisoprene, butadiene-acrylonitrile and the preferred butadiene styrene while antimony trisulphide, antinonyl, catechol, triphenylantimony, antimony phosphate, antimony oxychloride and alkyl-antimonates are specified equivalent antimony compounds. Specified esters are tri-(p-t-butylphenyl) phosphate, tributylphosphate, tri - 2 - ethylhexyl, triethyl, triphenyl, tricresyl, tris - (beta - chloroethyl) and tris-(2,3-dichloropropyl) phosphates.
