Abstract
1,009,394. Space-charge wave tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 2, 1962 [Oct. 4, 1961], No. 37354/62. Heading H1D. In an electron-beam tube for parametric amplification the electron gun, which has a plurality of anodes, is arranged to retard the electron beam when subjected to a magnetic focusing field of different strength from that in the region of beam-couplers and thereby to expand the beam cross-section within the gun to reduce noise. The effect is achieved by applying particular voltages to the six anodes of the gun and examples are given in the Specification. The gun may be of conventional construction, employing Brillouin focusing, otherwise the necessary change in magnetic field is achieved by surrounding the cathode 51 with a ring 65 of ferromagnetic material, supported between ceramic spacers. The tube is of quadruple type of known construction, the signal couplers comprising parallel plates (Fig. 1, not shown) or cavities. It is stated that the noise suppression obtained is effective for both the fast and slow waves.
