Abstract

An electrode consists of a moulded mass of a mixture of activated carbon and graphite, containing a hydrophobic binding-material, e.g. P.T.F.E. and a finely-divided metal catalyst. The electrode may be used in the ionization of O2 or H2 for which purposes proportions of 80% graphite, 20% carbon, and 20-15% graphite, 80-85% carbon respectively are preferred and for which the catalyst may be one of Ag, Au, Pt and Pd or Pd, Pt, Rh and Ni respectively. The electrode is made by mixing the carbon and graphite, impregnating with the catalyst, treating with the binder and then moulding the resultant material. In an example illustrating a preferred method of operation, a solution of palladium chloride in hot concentrated HCl was cooled and added to a slurry of carbon, graphite and water and the slurry was boiled and diluted with water. An aqueous sodium formate solution was added, and the slurry was boiled further filtered and washed. The impregnated carbon and graphite was mixed with further water, a P.T.F.E. dispersion was added, the mixture was filtered, and the residue dried in vacuo at 80 DEG C. In the subsequent moulding step, a metal gauze of a metal inert to the cell electrolyte, e.g. Ag, Ni or silver-plated Ni may be incorporated in the material, particularly on the surface of the electrode to be in contact with the cell electrolyte.
