An end bearing unit for facilitating the installation and removal of one or an assembly of straight or arched truss girders in bridges and hangars comprises an upper member pivotally connectible to the upper boom of the girder and secured to a bearing member adjustably spaced from the girder. As shown, Fig. 6, the upper member 13 of an end bearing unit is of adjustable length and is pivoted to the upper boom 4 of the end girder at 12. Rigidly secured to the other end of the member 13 is a rounded bearing member 22<SP>1</SP> connected to a bearing plate 25, mounted on an abutment 27, by a pin (not shown) passing through a slot in the member 22<SP>1</SP>, which is elongated in the longitudinal direction of the girder, and screwed to the plate 25. To raise or lower an end of the girder or girder assembly a turnbuckle 18 pivoted at 19 to the lower boom 7 and to a tensioned rod of an additional lower trussing if any and to the member 13 at 21 is shortened or lengthened respectively, the overall span of the girder(s) being shortened and the bearing member 22<SP>1</SP> pivoting and moving inwardly on the plate 25. An alternative form of bearing member 22<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 9, for use with steeply arched girders, has a slot 28<SP>1</SP> in its rounded bearing face which engages the shank of a headed member 30 secured to a bearing plate 25<SP>1</SP> which may be mounted on an abutment surface at an angle to the horizontal. If the girders are used as supports during the construction of reinforced concrete structures, e.g. bridges, the end bearing units enable the girders to be lowered and removed when the concrete has set.
