Abstract

1,005,485. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 31, 1964 [April 3, 1963], No. 13132/64. Heading H1D. A cathode-ray tube comprises a glass bulb constituted by a neck portion, a glass core 2 and a glass display face 1 sealed thereto, the zone of the bulb that adjoins the display surface being surrounded by a rigid surround 5 which exerts substantially no pressure on the bulb, the space between surround 5 and the bulb being filled with a solid filler 11, and lugs 8 being provided to secure the tube in a cabinet, lugs 8 each consisting of a rectangularly bent metal plate one portion of which, provided with an aperture 10, projects radially beyond surround 5 and the other portion 9 of which lies between surround 5 and the bulb, portion 9 being held solely by the solid filler 11. Portions 9 have recesses for the filler to grip. Filler 11 is preferably a synthetic substance adhering to the glass, the surround and the lugs. Alternatively non-adhesing substances such as sulphur or concrete are used in which case anchoring means such as ribs or protuberances may be provided in portion 7 of surround 5. During assembly, leakage of the filler from the gap is prevented by placing the tube on a support (Fig. 4, not shown) with a spong rubber pad against the lower edge of the gap and lugs 8 are located by jigs.
