Abstract

1,001,384. Rotary machines. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. May 23, 1962 [May 26, 1961], No. 19922/62. Heading F1F. [Also in Division F2] A spring for spring loading a sealing segment, Fig. 6, not shown, of a rotary engine consists of a wire 4 wound to form a plurality of helical coils having the same number of turns and having their axes parallel and spaced from one another adjacent coils being joined by a part of wire connecting one of the end coils of one coil with one of the end turns of an adjacent coil so that, in use, the turn at one end of each coil bears upon the segment and the turn at the other end of each coil bears upon a support 8. As shown a spring 4, Fig. 3, formed of wire 4 of circular cross-section comprises helices 5, 51 wound in the same direction the lower turn of one helice being connected to the upper turn of a neighbouring helice on the same side of the spring. In a modification, Fig. 7, not shown, in which the helices are wound in the same direction the helices are alternately connected at their upper and lower ends the connecting parts of wire lying in the same straight line as seen in plan. In a further modification in which consecutive helices are wound in opposite directions the wire passes from one side of the lower turn of one helice to the other side of the upper turn of the adjacent helice. In another arrangement, in which the connecting wire parts pass from one side of one helice to the other side of a neighbouring helice the helices are alternately connected at their upper and lower ends.
