Abstract

A mowing machine comprises two spaced side plates 1 which provide mountings for a bottom cutting blade 3 and a rotatable cutting reel 5 extending between the side plates, a mounting for a shaft 21 which extends transversely with respect to the side plates and carries on each end a crank arm 22 on which is mounted a wheel disposed outside the side plate, and means whereby the orientation of the shaft relative to the side plates may be readily adjusted, whereby the height of cut of the blade 3 is altered by adjustment of the vertical distance between the axes of the wheels and the blade. Lever arms 25 extend upwardly from the shaft 21 and support a block 26 with a threaded bore 28 in which engages a rod 30 with handle 31, rotation of which moves the block 26 along the rod 30 thereby rotating the shaft 21 causing the side plates 1, and therefore the blade 3, to be raised or lowered. The cutting reel 5 is supported in bearings on arms 9 pivoted to the side plates, a screw member 14 extending through the arm 9 so that the position of the reel relative to the blade 3 may be adjusted. In a further embodiment frame members 60 by which the machine may be coupled to a tractor are secured to each side plate and support a shaft 62 coupled with the wheel-supporting arms 22. A shaft 64 extends through an aperture 63 in one arm 22 and is attached to a disc 68 formed with a boss 73 having radially extending bores engageable by a bar 75 to rotate the disc 68. Rotation of the disc 68 moves the shaft 64 in a circle to rock the arms 22 about the axis of shaft 62, thereby causing the members 60 and hence the cutter reel and blade 3 to be raised or lowered. The machine is preferably coupled to a tractor as disclosed in Specification 1,002,141.
