L'invention s’inscrit dans le domaine des matériaux à base de Ta2Ni3S8.
L’invention porte en outre sur un procédé de fabrication d’un tel matériau et sur les applications, notamment comme composé thermoélectrique.
ART ANTERIEUR
Dans une industrie en constante évolution, l’élaboration de nouveaux matériaux revêt une grande importance dans le développement de nouvelles technologies et de nouveaux produits.
Notamment, l'industrie chimique nécessite la réalisation de nouveaux matériaux utilisés comme catalyseurs pour réaliser des réactions chimiques plus efficacement ou pour développer de nouveaux produits. Dans le cas des applications thermoélectriques, la large diffusion des dispositifs est limitée par les performances des matériaux et la toxicité des matériaux utilisés. Pour cette raison, la percée de l'application thermoélectrique à grande échelle est attendue par la découverte de nouveaux matériaux. Une situation similaire est observée pour les matériaux légers ou les nanocharges pour les composites. Dans ces deux cas, une structure fibreuse ou poreuse nouvellement découverte peut apporter des avantages considérables dans les produits finaux.
OBJECTIF DE L’INVENTION
L’invention vise donc à proposer un nouveau matériau apte à être utilisé pour diverses applications comme les matériaux légers, les composés thermoélectriques, les catalyseurs, les photo-catalyseurs, les composites renforcés de fibres ou encore les batteries.
À cet effet, l’invention vise un matériau à base de tantale, de nickel et de soufre, présentant une structure cristalline tétragonale du groupe d’espace 87.
Le matériau peut également comporter les caractéristiques optionnelles suivantes considérées isolément ou selon toutes les combinaisons techniques possibles :
- le matériau est de formule Ta2+xNi3+yS8+zavec -0,5 < x < 0,5, -0,75 < y <0,75, -2 < z <2 .
- le matériau est de formule Ta2Ni3S8dopé ou non.
- le matériau est anisotrope.
- le matériau est dopé.
- le matériau est dopé de type n.
- le dopant est choisi parmi le cuivre et le chlore.
L’invention vise également un procédé de fabrication du matériau tel que précédemment défini, qui est essentiellement caractérisé en ce qu’il comporte au moins les étapes de :
- préparation de poudres de tantale, nickel et soufre dans les proportions requises, et
- chauffage des poudres préparées à une température comprise entre 600 et 850 °C pendant un temps compris entre 24 et 200 heures.

L’invention vise enfin un composé thermoélectrique réalisé à base du matériau tel que précédemment décrit.

DESCRIPTION DETAILLEE DE L’INVENTION
De manière connue, le Ta2Ni3S8présente une structure cristalline orthorombique du groupe spatial 55. Ce matériau est notamment connu pour présenter des propriétés de semi-conducteur.
L’invention porte essentiellement sur un nouveau matériau à base de tantale, de nickel et de soufre présentant une nouvelle structure cristalline, ainsi que des nouvelles propriétés afférentes, notamment thermoélectriques.
Le matériau de l’invention présente une structure cristalline tétragonale du groupe spatial 87. Le matériau de l’invention est de formule Ta2+xNi3+yS8+ zavec -0,5 <x <0,5, -0,75 <y <0,75, -2 <z <2. Le matériau de l’invention peut être généralement défini comme étant de formule Ta2Ni3S8dopé ou non.
Fabrication du matériau de l’invention
Pour synthétiser le matériau de l’invention à base de Ta2Ni3S8, une quantité requise de poudre de tantale, nickel et soufre est chauffé dans une ampoule à quartz à 1000K ( environ 727 °C) pendant 144 heures. Il est d’abord constaté qu’après la synthèse le volume de l’ampoule à quartz occupé par le matériau synthétisé est environ cinq fois plus important que dans le cas des synthèses qui mènent à des lingots ou matériaux poudreux . À l'intérieur de l'ampoule de quartz, deux types de produit sont récupérés. Au niveau des parois de l’ampoule, le produit présente un aspect fibreux, tandis que dans le fond de l’ampoule, le produit a un aspect plus compact.
Caractérisation de la nanostructure et de la microstructure du matériau de l’invention
La caractérisation du matériau de l’invention telle que décrite ci-après a été réalisée à température ambiante.
Le diffractogramme de rayons X du matériau de l’invention obtenu par le procédé précédemment décrit est présenté en figure 1. Le diffractogramme de rayons X obtenu n’est assimilable à aucune structure cristalline disponible dans les bases de données. Le diagramme référencé 2 correspond à un diagramme modélisé de Ta2Ni3S8de l’art antérieur présentant une structure cristalline orthorhombique du groupe d’espace 55. On constate que la structure cristalline du matériau de l’invention ne correspond pas à une structure du groupe d’espace 55.
En référence aux figures 2a, 2b et 2c, la partie fibreuse du matériau de l’invention obtenu par le procédé précédemment décrit est observée par Microscopie Electronique à Balayage. On constate que le produit analysé est composé de fibres de plusieurs millimètres de longueur. Comme visible sur la figure 2c, la section d’une fibre est de forme rectangulaire et varie de quelques nanomètres à quelques micromètres. Une microanalyse par Energie Dispersive de rayons X (EDX) révèle que la partie fibreuse du matériau de l’invention est composé de 14% de tantale, 21% de nickel et 65% de soufre, une erreur de 2% devant être considérée au regard de la nature poreuse de la structure, on constate que la composition de la partie fibreuse du matériau de l’invention est très proche de la composition théorique du Ta2Ni3S8à savoir de 15% de tantale, 21% de nickel et 65% de soufre.
En référence aux figures 3a et 3b, la partie compacte du matériau de l’invention obtenu par le procédé précédemment décrit est observée par Microscopie Electronique à Balayage. On constate que le produit analysé est également composé de fibres, néanmoins plus épaisses et de plus faible longueur que dans la partie fibreuse. La longueur moyenne observée des fibres est inférieure à 100 microns. Une microanalyse par Energie Dispersive de rayons X (EDX) révèle que la partie compacte du matériau de l’invention est composée de 15% de tantale, 23% de nickel et 62% de soufre. La composition de la partie compacte du matériau de l’invention est ainsi également proche de la composition théorique du Ta2Ni3S8.
Le matériau de l’invention obtenu par le procédé précédemment décrit est soumis à un compactage par frittage connu sur le terme anglophone « Spark Plasma Sintering » pour obtenir des pastilles. Pour ce faire, le matériau récupéré dans l’ampoule, constitué majoritairement de la partie compacte, est broyé et tamisé à travers une maille d’ouvertures de 150 µm. Une microanalyse par Energie Dispersive de rayons X (EDX) révèle de nouveau une composition chimique très proche de la composition théorique du Ta2Ni3S8.
En référence à la figure 16, le diffractogramme de rayons X du matériau de l’invention obtenu par le procédé précédemment décrit (référence 1) est comparé au diffractogramme de rayons X du matériau de l’invention obtenu par le procédé précédemment décrit pour lequel la durée de chauffage est de 48h (référence 17). On constate que les allures des courbes obtenues sont identiques, ce qui permet de conclure que pour une durée de chauffage comprise entre 24 et 200h, la structure cristalline du matériau de l’invention est inchangée.
Détermination de la structure cristalline du matériau de l’invention
La détermination de la structure cristalline du matériau à base de Ta2Ni3S8de l’invention est complexe au regard de sa composition sous frome de grains fibreux.
Pour identifier cette structure cristalline, les outils de diffraction des rayons X conventionnels ne sont pas suffisants. La méthode de tomographie par diffraction d'électrons de précession (PEDT) (Vincent 1994, Kolb 2007, Mugnaioli 2009) combinée à des calculs dynamiques développés par Palatinus (Palatinus et al. 2015a et 2015b) ont été utilisé pour résoudre et affiner la structure d'une fibre isolée sur une grille de carbone.
Plus précisément, le traitement des données est effectué à l'aide du programme PETS (Palatinus 2011) : après la recherche de pics de diffractions sur tous les motifs, la valeur de l'angle azimutal (c'est-à-dire l'angle entre l'axe horizontal et la projection de l'axe incliné) est affinée. Puis, après regroupement, une analyse de l'espace vectoriel différentiel est calculée pour produire une représentation complète de l'espace réciproque.
Ensuite, le programme JANA2006 a été utilisé pour trouver la structure cristalline et affiner la matrice d'orientation permettant l'intégration des intensités pour chaque motif par PETS. Après l’étude d'une seule fibre les paramètres de la structure cristalline ont été découverts comme suit : a = 23,8525 Å, b = 23,8525 Å, c = 3,2962 Å, alpha = 90 °, bêta = 90 °, gamma = 90°, V = 1875,42 Å3)
Dans une première étape, une approche cinématique est utilisée et des intensités appartenant à la même réflexion sur des motifs adjacents sont intégrées, ceci conduit à une liste d'intensités contenant une valeur par indiceshklavec l'écart-type estimé correspondant. Les conditions de réflexion sonthkl, h + k + l = 2n, indiquant un centrage de type « I » (un nœud de réseau au centre du volume de la structure cristalline). Une première analyse des différentes symétries compatibles avec les intensités diffractées et les paramètres cellulaires obtenus conduit sans ambiguïté à rejeter la classe de Laue 4/mmm au profit de la classe de Laue 4/m (Rint= 61% pour le premier cas par rapport à 28% pour le dernier). Les différents groupes d'espace possibles compatibles avec les extinctions et la classe de Laue 4/m Laue sont alors I4/m, I-4 et I4.
La structure est ensuite résolueab initioen utilisant l'algorithme de retournement de charge, tel qu'implémenté dans le programme Superflip (Palatinus 2007) avec les informations chimiques fournies par l'analyse chimique (soit un rapport 2/3/8 pour Ta / Ni / S respectivement). Après itérations, le programme Superflip a trouvé une solution, dans le groupe d'espace I4/m, avec un facteur d'accord global autour de 20%, ce qui pourrait être élevé pour des données radiographiques, mais est une bonne valeur compte tenu des effets de diffraction dynamique restants pour les données basées sur la diffraction électronique.
La projection [001] de la surface d’isodensité électronique de la solution de structure calculée obtenue est présentée sur la figure 5. Son interprétation en termes de positions atomiques est présentée sur la figure 6, tandis qu'une représentation polyédrique est donnée sur la figure 7. Sur les figures 5 et 6 figures, la référence 3 correspond au tantale, la référence 4 correspond au nickel et la référence 5 correspond au soufre. Sur la figure 7, la référence 3a correspond aux prismes basaux triangulaires de TaS6, la référence 4a correspond aux pyramides basales carrées de NiS5et la référence 5a correspond aux carrés plans de NiS4. Ainsi, chaque ruban est composé de deux pyramides basales carrées de NiS5, un carré plan de NiS4et deux prismes basaux triangulaires de TaS6.

La figure 8 illustre le diffractogramme de rayons X du matériau de l’invention 1 obtenu par le procédé de fabrication précédemment décrit, comparé au diagramme modélisé de Ta2Ni3S8du groupe spatial I4/m (87) - tétragonal tel qu’obtenu selon la méthode de modélisation présentée. On constate que les deux diagrammes correspondent parfaitement. On en déduit ainsi que le matériau de l’invention à base de tantale, de nickel et de soufre, de type Ta2Ni3S8, présente une structure cristalline tétragonale du groupe d’espace 87.
Evaluations des propriétés thermoélectriques du matériau de l’invention
Un matériau thermoélectrique est caractérisé par sa figure de mérite zT qui s’exprime de la façon suivante :

Le facteur de mérite zT a été conçu pour comparer les performances des matériaux thermoélectriques utilisés dans le mode Peltier. Dans le cas de l’utilisation de matériaux thermoélectriques dans le mode Seebeck, c’est-à-dire pour la génération de puissance électrique à partir d’un gradient de température, les performances des matériaux électriques peuvent être illustrées par un facteur de puissance PF qui s’exprime de la façon suivante :

Dans les exemples ci-dessous, les performances des matériaux thermoélectriques de l’invention sont caractérisées par leur facteur de puissance et le coefficient de Seebeck.
L'évaluation des propriétés thermoélectrique est réalisée sur des pastilles fabriquées par la méthode du Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) telle que précédemment décrite. Les mesures sont réalisées dans la direction des fibres. Une série de trois échantillons est fabriquée pour évaluer l'influence de la stœchiométrie sur les propriétés thermoélectriques. Le coefficient de Seebeck et le facteur de puissance de ces échantillons sont présentés respectivement sur la figure 9 et sur la figure 10.
Sur ces deux figures, la référence 7 correspond au matériau de l’invention comportant 15,4% atomique de tantale, 23,1% atomique de nickel et 61,5% atomique de soufre. La référence 8 correspond au matériau de l’invention comportant 15,4% atomique de tantale, 23,4% atomique de nickel et 61,2% atomique de soufre. La référence 9 correspond au matériau de l’invention comportant 15,6% atomique de tantale, 23,3% atomique de nickel et 61,1% atomique de soufre.
On constate que le matériau de l’invention est intrinsèquement un semi-conducteur de type n. On constate également que des conditions riches en tantale et pauvres en soufre augmentent ses propriétés thermoélectriques de type n. A l’inverse, des conditions pauvres en nickel diminuent la conductivité de type n.
Les figures 11 et 12 illustrent respectivement le coefficient de Seebeck et le facteur de puissance du matériau de l’invention dopé avec de l’antimoine, du cuivre, du chlore et du tungstène. Plus précisément, la référence 10 correspond au matériau de l’invention comportant 15,4% atomique de tantale, 22,2% atomique de nickel, 61,5% atomique de soufre et un dopage à l’antimoine de 0,9% atomique. La référence 11 correspond au matériau de l’invention comportant 15,4% atomique de tantale, 22,2% atomique de nickel, 61,5% atomique de soufre et un dopage au cuivre de 0,9% atomique. La référence 12 correspond au matériau de l’invention comportant 15,4% atomique de tantale, 23,1% atomique de nickel, 59,7% atomique de soufre et un dopage au chlore de 1,8% atomique. La référence 13 correspond au matériau de l’invention comportant 14,8% atomique de tantale, 23,1% atomique de nickel, 61,5% atomique de soufre et un dopage au tungstène de 0,6% atomique.
On constate que le cuivre et le chlore sont des dopants de type n prometteurs, alors que l’antimoine et le tungstène n’améliorent pas les propriétés thermoélectriques.
Le caractère anisotrope du matériau de l’invention est évalué.
En référence à la figure 13, au cours du procédé SPS, la structure fibreuse a tendance à s'aligner en raison de la force de pression appliquée. Pour étudier l'anisotropie des propriétés de transport, une pastille d'un diamètre de 15 mm est préparée en utilisant les fibres du matériau de l’invention Ta2Ni3S8dopée au cuivre de formule Ta2Ni2,88Cu0,12S8De cette pastille, deux échantillons d'une section carrée de 2 x 2 millimètres et 10 millimètres de hauteur sont extraits comme illustré sur la figure 13. Un premier échantillon 15 permet d'étudier les propriétés de transport le long de la fibre tandis que le second échantillon 16 permet d'étudier les propriétés de transport en section. Les micrographies prises au Microscope Electronique à Balayage montrées sur la figure 13 illustrent les différences de morphologie selon que l’on se situe le long des fibres ou transversalement.
Les figures 14 et 15 illustrent respectivement le coefficient de Seebeck et le facteur de puissance du matériau de l’invention tel que précédemment obtenu (dopé avec du cuivre), la référence 15 correspondant au premier échantillon (le long des fibres) et la référence 16 correspondant au second échantillon (transversalement aux fibres).
On constate de nettes différences du coefficient Seebeck et du facteur de puissance selon l'orientation des fibres. Le matériau de l’invention présente ainsi un caractère anisotrope marqué. On remarque un facteur de puissance élevé de 1200 µW.K-2.m-1lorsque les propriétés de transport sont mesurées dans la direction des fibres.

- Matériau selon l’une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce qu’il est de formule Ta2Ni3S8dopé ou non.
- Matériau selon l’une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce qu’il est anisotrope.
- Matériau selon l’une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce qu’il est dopé.
- Matériau selon la revendication 5, caractérisé en ce qu’il est dopé de type n.
- Matériau selon la revendication 6, caractérisé en ce que le dopant est choisi parmi le cuivre et le chlore.
- Procédé de fabrication du matériau selon l’une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce qu’il comporte au moins les étapes de :
- préparation de poudres de tantale, nickel et soufre, et
- chauffage des poudres préparées à une température comprise entre 600 et 850 °C pendant un temps compris entre 24 et 200 heures. - Composé thermoélectrique réalisé à base du matériau selon l’une quelconque des revendications 1 à 7.
