Description

The present invention relates to the field of communication devices equipped with several radio communication technologies. More particularly, it relates to a method of identifying the communication requirements related to each of the technologies involved as well as planning and diagnostic methods using the census method. Today, radio communication technologies are multiplying and many devices combine several radio communication technologies for different uses. These wireless technologies include wireless local area network (WLAN) or wireless local area network (WLAN) technologies. This covers WiFi technologies based on the IEEE 802.11 standards group, or data services based on mobile phone standards such as GPRS, UMTS or other. Mesh communication technologies (mesh network in English), or the LR WPAN family (Low Rate Wireless Persona / Area Network in English) such as ZigBee networks meeting the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. WLAN technologies such as WiFi are broadband broadband technologies. The devices using them are generally not constrained by energy consumption because they are often connected to the electricity distribution network. Mesh communication technologies are narrow-band technologies that use a low level of transmission, typically about 100 times lower than broadband technologies. The communications are made by multiple relays (multi hop in English) in a heterogeneous system. Devices using this technology are divided into routing devices or routers used for relaying information generally not energy constrained and end devices typically strongly constrained energy. They may furthermore include so-called green devices (green devices in English) even more energetically constrained and not implying all the capabilities of the communication standard. Typically, they do not have the anti-collision system before listening (listen before talk). They can not guarantee the good reception of the data they emit. When a single device is equipped on the one hand with a broadband technology such as WiFi or GPRS and on the other hand with a mesh technology such as ZigBee, interference may occur limiting the proper functioning of both. technologies.

In the case where the two technologies share the same frequency band, which is the case of WiFi and ZigBee, we immediately understand that interference will occur during attempts to use both technologies simultaneously. In a less obvious way, even in the case where the frequency bands are different, there is also interference. This is the case between GPRS and ZigBee. Due to the collocation within the same device, there is phase noise or coupling between the antennas. It is known to try to limit this interference by modifying the channel used by the mesh network to remove as much as possible the frequency bands used by the two technologies. It is also known to implement the technique of listening before sending to manage collisions and allow both technologies to share the temporal resource. Experience shows that collocation of antennas causes interference even when the frequency bands used are relatively far apart. In particular, emissions from high-bandwidth, high-power technology, impact the sensitivity of the reception of low-power mesh technology. This interference dynamically modifies the quality of the mesh network. The technologies used generally use anti-collision techniques of the listening type before transmitting. Thus, WiFi and ZigBee use CSMA-CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) mechanisms. These techniques are not completely satisfactory in the case which concerns us. On the one hand, because of the differences between the transmission powers used by the two technologies, the power thresholds used for the detection of an occupation of the radio resource are different. It can happen that high power technology does not always detect the emissions of low power technology, because of the low level of emission. From then on, the high power technology deduces that the resource is available and is interfering with the emission of the low power network. On the other hand, and this results in part from the first point, the use of this technology will induce repeated attempts of transmission from the mesh network, with waiting times, and listening periods multiplied. Here comes the fact that, typically, the end devices mesh networks are very energy constrained and that these multiple occurrences of listening cycles, transmission, necessary to achieve communication have a disastrous impact on the energy consumption of the device. Communication ends up being done, but at a prohibitive energy cost. The invention aims to solve the above problems by proposing a method of identifying the different services and their communication needs using radio communication technologies. This process includes a first step of identifying the various services and their technology-based needs with an estimate of the quality of the different radio links. It follows a step of prioritization between the different services identified. Advantageously, this method is then used for diagnostic purposes of the network or for scheduling communications of the apparatus. Fig. 1 illustrates the general architecture of the network in the exemplary embodiment of the invention. There is a device 1.1 with means of connection to a WLAN technology network, typically WiFi, but which can also be GPRS or any other broadband radio communication technology. The device 1.1 is also provided with connection means to a mesh network, typically ZigBee, but can also be any type of mesh radio communication technology. This type of device is typically found as a central part of a personal home network. This apparatus is called a gateway in this document because it typically allows to interface at least two different radio technology networks. The devices 1.2 represented by circles illustrate the communicating devices of the mesh network, while the devices 1.3 represented by a rectangle illustrate the devices communicating using the broadband network. As we have seen in the introduction, the simultaneous use of both technologies is likely to introduce harmful interference to the quality of the transmission. Some configurations are particularly troublesome, for example in the case where two devices, a WiFi and another Zigbee, will seek to emit at the same time while they are relatively distant from each other. In this case, because of differences in transmission power, the WiFi device is not able to detect the ZigBee transmission. It then starts transmitting during the transmission period of the ZigBee device that it disturbs. This configuration causes many transmission errors in the ZigBee network and thus many re-emission attempts that consume a lot of energy.

Another configuration also poses a problem, it is the configuration called the hidden node. This configuration occurs when the device 1.1, typically a gateway, is between a WiFi device and a ZigBee device relatively far apart. In this case, and when both devices seek to communicate at the same time, the listening technologies before transmitting do not work. Indeed, the two devices if they are both within range of the gateway 1.1 that will receive their broadcasts are out of range radio one of the other, whether WiFi or ZigBee. They are therefore not able to detect the emissions of the other device and will begin to transmit simultaneously considering the available radio channel. At the receiving gateway, the two simultaneous broadcasts will interfere and cause communications to fail. These problems do not usually make the system inoperative. Indeed, transmission errors result in attempts to re-transmit. As a result, communication generally succeeds. On the other hand, they generate a significant increase in the energy consumption of the system. When seeking to improve the energy consumption of the system, the first problem to be solved is to acquire an understanding of the communication needs of the system. This knowledge then makes it possible to take corrective measures such as moving certain devices or changing certain parameters. It also makes it possible to draw up precise diagnoses of the communication budget of the network. The communications that occur in this type of network can be separated into two categories. On the one hand, there are event communications that occur in response to an event outside the system. This event may correspond to an interaction of the user who presses a key of the gateway 1.1 for example or to the detection of an event, presence of an individual, exceeded temperature threshold or other, of a device ZigBee in a home automation network. These communications are inherently unpredictable and will not be treated in the context of the invention. On the other hand, there are communications corresponding to periodic services. For example, the broadband network can check the presence of a new version of its internal software periodically. In the mesh network, some devices will, for example, report periodically on their status.

It may be to periodically raise a temperature in a heating management system or the gateway may request its status to a device periodically. These periodic services will lead to periodic communication needs. Some of these services have a functional priority over others for the overall operation of the system. Others have operational priority in that the failure of communication has more impact on the energy balance of the system than others. Some of these services support a change in their communication period or time differences in communication. It is advantageous to be able to establish a knowledge of these different services for all the radio communication technologies involved. This knowledge can materialize in different forms. In the exemplary embodiment of the invention, a services table is created with a set of characteristics of each of these periodic services. This table can then be used to establish a diagnosis of network operation or to program a sequencer (scheduler in English) of the various communications to reduce the number of collisions. To establish this service table according to the invention, the described method advantageously uses three types of data. In some embodiments, depending on the actual networks used, the three types of data may not be available. We are satisfied with the available data.

The first type is an estimate of the quality of each radio link, typically from channel attenuation and signal reception levels on these links. This information is important because it affects the transmission power required for transmissions and thus the interference generated. A second type of data relates to the consumption constraints of the device or devices involved by each service. These data are used in assigning priorities to different services. A very energy constrained apparatus is considered as a priority on a less energy constrained apparatus. The idea here is to limit the energy costs due to transmission failures and re-emissions of data.

A third type of data relates to the possibilities of modifying the behavior of each service. Indeed, some services can not be modified when others can be set to change the frequency of communications or accept a time range of communication to delay certain exchanges. We talk about behavioral data. These data are important because their knowledge helps to determine the margins we are given to try to improve communications in the system. Fig. 2 illustrates the main steps of the method of establishing the service table. A first step 2.1 consists of a census of periodic services involving communication between the gateway and a device of the broadband network. This census includes the collection of data of the three types available. Thus, for example, information relating to the quality of the radio link between the gateway and the apparatus concerned, a level of background noise, a number of packets received from another network or a minimum packet size for which a communication rendezvous mechanism is established.

This mechanism known as RTS / CTS (Ready To Send / Clear To Send) makes it possible to declare to its interlocutor that one is ready to transmit, RTS, and to wait for it a signal granting the right to issue, CTS. This census includes the collection of information relating to the periodicity of communications related to the service. A step 2.2 consists of doing the same work on the mesh network. Here again we collect a dataset of the three types mentioned above available for the different services. Here too, as for step 2.1, the actual list of data collected depends on the actual network used. In the exemplary embodiment, the mesh network is a ZigBee network where, for example, the following data can be collected. The service is identified using an End-Point Number and IEEE address. The distance in the number of relays required between the gateway and the device with which to communicate is collected. The quality of the radio link between the gateway and the first relay is collected on the path between the gateway and the end device. An application priority is also collected if it is available. This is typically modifiable by the user. It is typically the priority that says that a security-related service has priority over a heating management service in a home automation system. It is also advantageous to know whether the call is acknowledged or not. This parameter affects the duration of the communication, if it is acknowledged must take into account the duration of the transmission of the acknowledgment in addition to the duration of the transmission of the actual data. It is necessary to collect the periodicity of the transmissions for each service, this parameter being available or measured by the gateway. Advantageously, a flag is collected that makes it possible to know whether the automatic report of attributes for the service can be configured. Step 2.3 consists of assigning priority levels to the various services identified according to the application constraints and energy constraints of the devices involved on the network.

Step 2.4 is to create the table of identified services with assigned levels of priorities. The parameters can be dynamically modified by the user or automatically. If some of the parameters are not accessible, it is possible to use default settings.

Fig. 3 illustrates in more detail the census procedure within the ZigBee mesh network of the exemplary embodiment. The first step 3.1 consists in calculating the distance of each terminal node of the ZigBee network. To do this, a tree course "width first".

Advantageously, this search is renewed periodically, typically every 15 minutes, to follow the evolutions of the network. A second step 3.2 consists of collecting the information relating to the quality of the radio link. If the profile and the application used provide for the use of the received power or RSSI (Receive Signal Strengh Indication). It is also possible to use a ZigBee primitive called Mgmtlgirgst which allows to obtain the list of neighbors of a node and the associated RSSI values. ZigBee Nodedescrrsp is used to find information about the node's power supply mode, typically AC power or battery power. It also allows to know if the remote device is able to receive information when it is inactive. The third step 3.3 is to determine the periodicity of the communications for the different services. Periodic services mainly consist of parameter escalations from ZigBee nodes such as temperature rise, lamp status, and others. The periodicity can often be set by the application using a configuration of the remote device that sets the requested periodicity. When the periodicity of communications can not be defined by the application, it is determined by measuring the arrival times of the communication frames of the different devices. For example, an "ant colony" type algorithm can be used to determine this periodicity. The measured value can be advantageously refined during each reception of such a frame. Advantageously, the frames received will be marked temporally with the aid of a time stamp (timestamp in English) directly by the ZigBee pilot. One can also ask to read the attribute indicating this periodicity. Step 3.4 is to collect a configuration state of the apparatus. It is a matter of knowing to what extent one is able to change the configuration to modify in particular the periodicity of the communications. More particularly, it is collected whether or not to use the command Configurereporting for the service in question.

Step 3.5 is to determine whether the communications are initiated by the gateway or by the remote device. In the first case, it is necessary to consider the duration of a request from the gateway to which the remote device will respond. In the second case, only the sending of information by the remote device is to be taken into account. This parameter can be used together with the one that tells us if the remote device is able to receive requests when it is idle. All this information allows us to know the estimated duration of the communication. These steps can be performed in any chronological order.

Once the census of the various services of the broadband and mesh networks is carried out and the parameters are collected, we will detail the allocation of the priorities in the example of realization. The priority level of the services will be assigned according to the parameters collected. This priority level is static and should not vary dynamically over time.

In the exemplary embodiment, the priorities are, for example, set as follows. A security-related service involving a battery-operated remote device that can not receive communication when idle takes precedence over a heating-related service that also involves a battery-operated remote device that can not receive communication when it is switched off. he is on standby. The latter has priority over a service related to security involving a device powered on the sector. Other rules complement this example to allow priority to be given to all services.

Optionally, we fix a maximum number of services taken into account. This limit is advantageous when one wants to limit the computing power necessary for the treatment of these services. Optionally, only those services whose priority is higher than a given priority threshold are considered. For example, if none of the interfaces prone to interference with the mesh network is activated, this threshold is maximum. Whereas if one desires a maximum quality of service, the threshold is, on the contrary, fixed minimum. A service table is thus obtained, with for each service a service identifier, an assigned priority, a distance for the services of the mesh network and a periodicity parameter. Advantageously, the number of services is limited by a maximum number of services and may be limited to services whose priority is greater than a given threshold. This table provides an understanding of the communication needs of the gateway.

It can be used for different purposes. We will describe two possible uses of this table. A first use is to build a diagnostic report of the operation of the network. A second use is to schedule a sequencing of communications limiting conflicts between different radio communication technologies used by the gateway.

A diagnostic report of the network state uses the table, for example, to browse all the services and to raise the quality levels of the radio links. We can deduce problems due to poor positioning of some devices causing shadowing phenomena, fading (English fading) or too far away. It is then possible to deduce the displacement of some devices for better use. The course of neighboring WiFi networks with the associated powers may also make it possible to justify suggestions for moving WiFi access points, for example. It is also possible to detect an abnormally loud white noise level.

Another use is to set up a communications sequencer. This sequencer is activated whenever an application of the gateway tries to communicate. It is then used to detect a possible conflict at the next call using the established service table. He then seeks to use the room for maneuver identified in the table to avoid, as far as possible, conflicts. He may seek to delay certain communications. It also detects recurring conflicts that it seeks to delete if it can change the scheduling of communications to eliminate the conflict. Fig. 4 illustrates the operation of the sequencer according to the exemplary embodiment of the invention.

Step 4.1 corresponds to the standby state which is the default state of the sequencer. I1 comes out of this standby state on receipt of an interrupt triggered by a modification of a network interface. This change results from a reception or a broadcast on one of the radio communication networks, in this case WiFi or ZigBee in the exemplary embodiment.

Step 4.2 is to determine if there will be a conflict during the next communication break. For this, it lists all the active communications at the gateway at the moment. It establishes from the table of previously built services, future predictable interruptions as well as active communications at that time. When he knows the communications that will occur at the next break, he determines whether these communications are conflicting or not. Indeed, all competing communications do not necessarily generate a conflict. Rules for different radio aspects are taken into account to determine whether there is conflict or not. These rules advantageously take into account the direction of communication, reception or emission, the necessary radio power and the spacing of the antennas. For example, a WiFi reception and a ZigBee broadcast with a level above a given level do not generate a conflict, whereas a ZigBee reception is always in conflict with a WiFi broadcast.

In the case where there is no determined conflict for the next interrupt, the sequencer returns to the standby state. Otherwise, services whose communications conflict are sorted in order of priority in step 4.3. The priorities given in the services table are used for this purpose. In addition, when two services have equal priorities, additional radio criteria are used to prioritize them. For example, the distance in number of relays of the device involved by the service or the quality of the radio link is used. We look at all these services in the order of priority, from least priority to highest priority, to look for a service that can be delayed. These are steps 4.4 and 4.6. This information is present in the services table. When a service is found whose communication can be delayed, this service is updated by applying the delay, step 4.5, and the conflict determination analysis 4.2 is repeated. If we run through the list of services in conflict without successfully eliminating the conflict, we perform a step 4.7 to determine if the conflict is recurrent. To do this, we increment each conflict involving two same services a counter and setting a threshold to the value of this counter beyond which the existence of a recurring conflict is determined. Such a recurring conflict is often due to two services having a very close periodicity of communication. In the service table, step 4.8, it is then checked whether it is possible to modify the periodicity of at least one of the services involved in the detected recurrent conflict. If it is possible, this modification is done, step 4.9, before returning to the standby state. Advantageously, when an application of the gateway requests a communication that is not part of the programming of the periodic services, typically in response to an action by the user, it can seize the sequencer. The sequencer is then able to determine a future range of silence where the radio channel is not used. If the waiting time to use this range is compatible with the application, the application waits for the range to start communication. Thus, the communication does not generate any conflict with the periodic services.
