The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a seal comprising polytetrafluoroethylene and the seal thus obtained. Polytetrafluoroethylene is known in particular for its surface properties, it has indeed a low coefficient of friction, and is widely used in functions related to sealing. It is used extensively to make seals, for example flat seals and annular seals of various sections. It also has excellent resistance to chemicals and good thermal stability. These seals are for example obtained by hot molding of polytetrafluoroethylene. However, polytetrafluoroethylene is relatively difficult to implement so that all forms of joint can not be obtained with this polymer. In certain applications, and especially in the presence of hydrocarbons, it has been imagined to produce seals by mixing polytetrafluoroethylene powder with a perfluorinated elastomer to then obtain a seal capable of being cured. The implementation of such a seal is relatively complex. Reference can be made in particular to JP 2000 012054, which describes this seal and its method of production. Furthermore, the hot molding of polytetrafluoroethylene tends to cause a degradation of the properties of the native material and thus a loss of the mechanical properties of the seal thus obtained. Indeed, the polymer is brought to a temperature above a limit temperature close to its melting temperature, which can change in particular the proportion of crystalline zones and amorphous zones of the polymer itself. In addition, the hot molding of polytetrafluoroethylene can cause fumes of toxic gases, for example perfluoro-isobuthylene, when the temperature control is not properly ensured. Also, a problem which arises and which the present invention seeks to solve is to provide a process which not only makes it possible to produce a polytetrafluoroethylene gasket in a relatively inexpensive and therefore less expensive manner but also to produce a gasket of which the sealing properties are increased. In order to solve this problem, the present invention proposes, lo according to a first object, a process for manufacturing seals comprising polytetrafluoroethylene, said process being of the type in which polytetrafluoroethylene is provided in the form of powder grains; and according to the invention the method further comprises the following steps: said grains of powder are agglomerated to form an agglomerate and then said agglomerate is pressed to weld said grains of powder agglomerated with each other, which makes it possible to obtain a single piece of polytetrafluoroethylene ; and finally, recovering said single piece to form a seal. Thus, a characteristic of the invention lies in the mode of treatment of the grains of polytetrafluoroethylene powder, for which the polymer is in the native state or very slightly converted, and therefore whose crystallinity rate is still relatively high. which grains of powder weld together to form a solid body in one and the same piece. Indeed, the compression of the agglomerate of powder grains causes a surface heating, which allows their welding, without causing a substantial increase in the temperature of the heart of the grains, whose properties remain intact. In this way, a single piece of polytetrafluoroethylene is obtained, the intrinsic properties of which are generally those of the polymer in the native state, which gives it superior mechanical characteristics to the same part obtained by extrusion of polytetrafluoroethylene. It will be recalled that the crystallinity level of a polymer corresponds to the proportion of crystallized zones relative to the proportion of amorphous zones. The crystallized zones are by definition organized, and therefore denser, and in particular give the polymer greater mechanical strength. Under certain circumstances, the polymer in powder form has already undergone transformations which have caused a decrease in the crystallinity level relative to the crystallinity level of a polymer in the native state. However, this decreased crystallinity level remains higher than the degree of crystallinity of a polymer which would have undergone thermal transformations by lo-molding, for example. In addition, the implementation is relatively less restrictive and more energy-efficient than the use of polytetrafluoroethylene according to the prior art, since it is not necessary to wear the polymer, to all of the at least a part of the mass of aglomerate at a temperature at least equal to its melting point. According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, said polytetrafluoroethylene powder grains having a determined melting temperature, said agglomerate is brought to a temperature below said determined melting temperature, so as not to modify the internal structure of the native polymer of the powder grains, but nevertheless, to provide a first quantity of energy necessary for the welding of the grains of powder together. The surplus energy is then provided during compression of the agglomerate. It is understood that, according to the process, it is important to provide the grains with a sufficient amount of energy to melt enough material on the surface of the grains to cause them to weld by recrystallization upon cooling, and that the first amount of heat energy supplied directly to the agglomerate by heating before compression, is not enough. For example, the agglomerate of powder grains is brought to a temperature above 200 ° C, for example 280 ° C, which is lower than the melting temperature of polytetrafluoroethylene which is 327 ° C, but which already allows for provide a quantity of thermal energy of interest to induce a good welding of the grains of powder between them. Furthermore, and according to a particular embodiment of the advantageous invention, said agglomerate is struck between two punches, slidably mounted on a matrix, for compressing said agglomerate. Thus, the grains of powder are shocked together by driving one of the two punches towards the other at high speed and with a strong acceleration, so as to produce an impact on both sides of the agglomerate. powder grains. According to a particular embodiment of the invention, one of the punches is held in a fixed position, while the other is driven percussion to said one of the punches. Advantageously, said agglomerate is compressed by exerting a plurality of percussions of said agglomerate between the two punches so as to provide an energy necessary for the melting of a sufficient quantity of polymer on the surface of the grains of powder and cause their welding during crystallization. working on cooling. Preferably, the agglomerate is struck between 30 and 150 times, for example 100 times at a frequency between, once every two seconds and five times per second. Preferably, said grains of powder provided have a particle size of which the extremum of the Gaussian curve is between 5 and 100 μm, for example 20 μm, so as to obtain a homogeneous piece without porosity. Furthermore, according to a preferred embodiment, said single piece recovered is machined to form said seal. According to another embodiment, the recovered part is directly usable as a seal. For this, the tooling is adapted and comprises a matrix, lower and upper punches, and a pin also called core. According to another object, the present invention provides a polytetrafluoroethylene gasket manufactured by a manufacturing method of the type described above.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent on reading the following description of a particular embodiment of the invention, given by way of indication but not limitation, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: s - Figure 1 is a schematic view illustrating a device for implementing a method of manufacturing a seal according to the invention and in a first state; - Figure 2 shows the device shown in Figure 1, in a second state; ~ o - Figure 3 schematically shows an installation for testing a seal according to the invention; and FIG. 4 illustrates a comparative test of different seals made in the installation shown in FIG. 3. FIG. 1 schematically represents a press 10 under which is installed a compression tool comprising a die 12 and two punches, one lower 14, the other higher 16. The matrix 12 has a cylindrical housing 18 with a diameter of 50 mm and the punches 14, 16 have a cross section identical to the diameter of the cylindrical housing 18, the play functional, so as to slide freely inside. The press 10 makes it possible to strike the upper punch 16 when it is engaged in the cylindrical housing 18, whereas the lower punch 14 is held in a fixed position in the matrix 12. The upper punch 16 is struck via a mass of 350 kg, for example. The mass is propelled at high speed, between 1 and 5 m / s, by means of hydraulic means, for example at a speed of two meters / second. In addition, the press 10 allows repeated percussion on the upper punch 16, and in this case, the percussion is performed at a specific frequency, for example a Hertz. Moreover, the matrix 12 and the punches 14, 16 are equipped with heating means for supplying thermal energy into the housing 18.
According to the invention, native polytetrafluoroethylene powder or having a degree of crystallinity of a polymer close to the native state, with an average particle size of 20 μm, is chosen, and comes directly from the polymerization reactor, moderately intermediate treatment to obtain it in powder form. The powder grains consist of polytetrafluoroethylene with a degree of crystallinity of between 75 and 85% and in this case 78%. Thus, the crystallized zones that are formed in the polymer from its genesis, and which confer advantageous mechanical properties, are they preserved with a strong percentage despite the intermediate treatment to obtain the powder. According to the method of manufacture, object of the invention, the lower punch 14 is kept partially engaged in the die 12 while the upper punch 16 is held in a position spaced from the die 12, so as to load the housing 18 with the Native polytetrafluoroethylene powder of the aforementioned type. It will be noted that the polytetrafluoroethylene is in the native state or in a state where its crystallinity level is close to that of the native state. In the present case, about 40 g of powder 20 are carried in the housing 18 against the lower punch 14. The matrix heating means are activated beforehand so as to bring the punches to an optimum temperature, for example of 250.degree. ° C, and the polytetrafluoroethylene powder is preheated to the same temperature value. When the temperature of the tool is stabilized, said preheated powder 20 is loaded into the housing 18. Then, as shown in FIG. 2, the powder grains 20 are first agglomerated by means of the upper punch 16 by introducing it into the cylindrical housing 18 and exerting great pressure on it while the lower punch 14 is held in a fixed position relative to the matrix 12. In the present case, the pressure exerted is between 40 and 80 MPa, for example of the order of 60 MPa, so that one obtains an agglomerate of grains of powder, from which the air has been driven, inside a confined space delimited by the cylindrical housing 18. Then, we hit the upper punch 16 through the mass at a frequency of one Hertz for 99 seconds. In this way, the agglomerate of powder grains 20 undergoes 99 percussions and in this case, the total amount of energy supplied to the agglomerate is about 100 kJ, more precisely 99 792 J. Thus, thanks to this The energy supplied, both thermal and mechanical, of a total per gram of powder of about 2400 J, causes the melting of the surface of the grains and therefore, when the surface temperature decreases, their welding between them. There is then obtained one and the same cylindrical solid part, non-porous or at least which has a minimum porosity, and relatively isotropic. Its diameter is substantially 49.5 mm while its thickness is close to 9.5 mm. The degree of crystallinity of the polytetrafluoroethylene of the part thus obtained, and of the order of 80%, is substantially that of the native polytetrafluoroethylene powder initially introduced into the press 10. Therefore, it is clear that the process conforms to The invention does not result in any measurable degradation of the native polymer structure and in particular relaxation of the crystallized zones. This crystallinity level can be compared with that of hot-formed polytetrafluoroethylene, for example extruded, which is only 50% or 60%. In fact, the mechanical characteristics of the material thus obtained are degraded, as will be shown hereinafter. A measurement of the density of the part thus formed according to the process according to the invention in comparison with the density of the heat-treated polytetrafluoroethylene makes it possible to corroborate this difference in crystallinity. Indeed, the density of the piece obtained is close to 2.27 while the density of the polytetrafluoroethylene converted to heat is only 2.19.
The sealing properties of the resulting part were compared to commercial polytetrafluoroethylene gaskets obtained by heat-treating the polymer. To do this, these seals having an outer diameter of 46 mm, an internal diameter of 30 mm and a thickness of 8 mm, seals of the same dimensions were machined in parts obtained according to the method object of the invention. It was paid attention during the machining, to the state of surface of the joints so that it is comparable to that of the joints of trade. The gaskets thus machined were compared to the gaskets of the trade through an installation shown schematically in Figure 3. This installation simulates the operation of an industrial valve gland. It comprises a main tubular body 22 with a diameter of 46 mm and an axial sleeve 24 housed coaxially inside the main tubular body 22. The axial sleeve 24 has it, a diameter of 30 millimeters. In addition, the axial sleeve 24 has a shoulder 26 on which is mounted a first porous metal ring 28. A test gasket 30 is engaged in the main tubular body 22 around the axial sleeve 24 and resting on the metal ring In view of the dimensions of the selected seals, with an outer diameter of 46 mm and an internal diameter of 30 mm, the space defined between the axial sleeve 24 and the main tubular body 22 is entirely closed and defines an internal space of the main tubular body 22 in two sealed chambers relative to each other, a lower chamber 29 and an upper chamber 31. In addition, a second porous metal ring 32 is mounted in support against the seal to be tested 30. In this way, a pressure of 20 MPa, for example, can be applied to the second porous metal ring 32, while the first porous metal ring 28 is held in fixed position via the shoulder 26. Thus, the test gasket 30 is compressed between the two porous metal rings 28, 32 in a normal operating situation.
In order to control the sealing properties of the joint to be tested 30, the lower chamber 29 is pressurized with helium to an initial value of 50 bar and the pressure drop of this lower chamber 29 is measured in time. It will be observed that the porous metal rings 28, 32 allow the passage of helium without significant pressure drop. Also, the helium passes through the lower ring 28 and the gas pressure is uniform on the seal 30 to be tested. Helium is the reference fluid for the measurement of sealing by gas tracer. Thus, two commercial seals made of polytetrafluoroethylene and two seals machined from a part obtained according to the process according to the invention were compared. The results are shown in the graph in Figure 4. It should be noted that the helium infiltrates not only through the joint itself, but also at the axial interface of the tested joint and the wall of the tubular body. main 22 on the one hand, and that of the seal and the wall of the sleeve 24 on the other hand. The measured signal is therefore the resultant of the two escape paths. It is recognized that this interfacial leakage is less important for polytetrafluoroethylene than for other materials such as graphite. In addition, care has been taken to ensure that the machining results in a surface condition of the polytetrafluoroethylene rings which is not very different from that of the commercial joints; it is therefore reasonable to think that the differences in sealing behavior come mainly from the transfer of gas through the joints. Thus, it is observed that after 60,000 seconds, from an initial pressure of 50 bar, and for two seals according to the invention, the pressure drops corresponding to the curves 34 and 36 are respectively 1.5 and 5.3 bars. While at the end of the same time the pressure drops for the two commercial seals, the pressure drops corresponding to the curves 38 and 40 are respectively 15 and 25 bars. Thus, the seals according to the invention retain their seal over time while the seal of commercial joints, decreases more quickly.
Consequently, the sealing properties of the joints obtained according to the process according to the invention are greater than those of commercial polytetrafluoroethylene gaskets. Another object of the present invention is to provide a polytetrafluoroethylene sealant, obtained by a process according to the invention. Furthermore, it is intended to incorporate in the polytetrafluoroethylene powder, various other fluorinated polymers such as fluorinated ethylene-propylene (FEP), perfluoroalkoxy (PFA), polyfluorovinylidene ~ (PVDF) or a modified copolymer ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), so as to adjust the properties of the joint then manufactured to the various materials between which it is interposed. In addition, it is also intended to incorporate elastomer polymers in the polytetrafluoroethylene powder so as to increase the resilience of the seal.
