Description

BOUGIE D'ALLUMAGE OPTIQUEOPTICAL IGNITION CANDLE

The present invention relates to an optical spark plug for an internal combustion engine and an ignition system using such a spark plug.

In an internal combustion engine, the four stages of the thermodynamic cycle fuel gas and air intake, compression of the gas mixture, expansion due to the explosion of the mixture, exhaust - take place successively in one and the same chamber, called chamber of combustion.

Internal combustion engines, conventionally used for motor vehicles, comprise an ignition device for igniting the gas mixture in the combustion chamber by means of a spark.

Typically, the ignition system comprises a spark plug for bringing a high voltage current into the combustion chamber to ignite the gas mixture by producing an electric spark. An electric arc is produced between a ground electrode and a central electrode by discharging an electric circuit, which allows the initiation of combustion in the area near the spark plug. A flame core is created by this electric spark and the expansion of this core causes the explosion of the gaseous mixture which constitutes the relaxation stage of the thermodynamic cycle of the engine. The spark plug is usually inserted into the combustion chamber from the cylinder head of the combustion chamber.

During ignition using a conventional automobile spark plug, energy is deposited in the gas mixture over a relatively long time, of the order of several tens of microseconds, following a complex process .

The electric potential between the electrodes of the spark plug increases to a so-called breakdown phase establishing an electronic current between said electrodes. This phase causes ionization of the gas molecules of the mixture comprising the compressed fuel in the region of the electrodes of the candle to form a plasma containing precursors of chemical reactions. This phase is very short, of the order of a few tens of nanoseconds. The potential difference between the electrodes is then abruptly lowered and this potential drop causes an electric arc between the electrodes which heats the plasma created during the breakdown phase. The plasma then generates a flame core that initiates the combustion reaction in the candle area. With such an ignition system, a large part of the energy is lost in the form of heat, which leads to a decrease in the efficiency of the system.

The use of an electric spark plug as described above also has several disadvantages.

A: 1Patches \ 22400 \ 22473PSA.dac -21/06/04 - 17:06 - 1/14 In particular, the intrusion of the spark plug into the combustion chamber makes it susceptible to fouling, requiring maintenance and a regular replacement. This intrusion of the spark plug can also modify the aerodynamics in the ignition zone and cause disturbances during the expansion of the flame core.

The use of an electric arc leads in the long term erosion of the electrodes of the candle. In addition, the randomness of the positioning of the electric arc, which has a characteristic time greater than the characteristic time of the local turbulence of the gas mixture, makes the ignition system very sensitive to local conditions near the spark plug, namely the quality of the mixture air fuel gas residuals and the local velocities of the gaseous flows.

The expansion of the flame core is also slowed down, and can even be stopped, at the beginning of its propagation by thermal losses towards the walls of the electrode of the candle itself. In addition, the expansion speed of the flame core is relatively low, related to the low energy efficiency of the plasma transition during which the flame is not optimal.

In addition, during the cold start, the amount of fuel injected into the combustion chamber is greater than the amount injected in conventional operation to overcome unfavorable temperature conditions, which leads to strongly wetting the electrodes of the candle and to decrease efficiency.

To replace the conventional spark ignition system, it has been proposed to use an ignition device by a laser radiation source. Focusing a laser source at a point in the gas mixture allows ionization and heating of the mixture to create a flame core capable of causing the mixture to explode.

For example, US Pat. No. 4,416,226 proposes to have a laser mounted adjacent to a combustion chamber. The optical system described in this document is fixed and does not allow to vary the focusing point of the laser. This system does not optimize the ignition point.

Patent application WO-A-02/095220 discloses an ignition system with a laser mounted adjacent a combustion chamber. An associated optical system makes it possible to vary the focus point.

The systems described in these two aforementioned documents use lasers arranged directly adjacent to the combustion chamber, which constitutes heavy and complex systems to implement.

US-A-5 756 924 discloses a laser ignition system. This patent proposes to focus in a combustion chamber a first high power pulse to initiate ignition by forming a plasma in the gas mixture, followed by a second pulse of longer duration and lower R: Patent Power to support the spread of the ignition flame core. This document, however, recommends the use of two different lasers to provide the two types of pulses required. Such a system is complex and expensive.

US-A-6,514,069 also discloses a laser ignition system. A master laser controls at least one ignition laser whose beam is directly emitted near the injection nozzle in the combustion chamber. Such a system proposes to use a plurality of lasers coupled to a plurality of fuel injection nozzles. Such a system is complex and expensive.

DE 10145944 discloses an optical spark plug in the form of a standard electric spark plug, intrusive in the combustion chamber. The central electrode of the candle described in this document leads a light signal to focus in the combustion chamber. No focusing optical system is however described. The ignition point can not be optimized. In addition, the intrusiveness of this plug causes the aforementioned drawbacks on the subject of fouling of the electrode and turbulence in the ignition zone.

US-A-6,053,140 discloses a laser ignition system in which an optical guide leads a light beam into a combustion chamber at the head gasket. Lenses integrated in the optical guide enable the beam to be focused on a particular ignition point in the combustion chamber. For multi-site ignition, it is proposed to use a plurality of optical guides disposed on the periphery of the head gasket. Each guide introduces a focused optical beam at a particular point in the combustion chamber. However, this document does not describe how the light pulse is distributed between the different guides. In addition, it is necessary to provide several optical inputs to the combustion chamber.

All the aforementioned documents do not make it possible to achieve an optical ignition in a combustion chamber from a simple system, requiring only one laser and a single optical input in the combustion chamber, while proposing optimum control of the focal point (s) of the ignition laser beam.

There is therefore a need for a specific element constituting an optical spark plug that can be used in place of the traditional candle and adapted to receive the light pulses from an optical system to focus simultaneously at several points. a combustion chamber.

For this purpose, the invention proposes an optical spark plug, comprising: an optical input adapted to receive light pulses; R: \ Patents \ 22400 \ 22473PSA.doc - 21/06/04 - 17:06 - 3/14 a focusing system; a birefringent device adapted to be placed in the path of a focused pulse; an optical output adapted to be coupled to a combustion chamber.

The optical spark plug according to the invention comprises an optical input adapted to receive light pulses and an optical output adapted to be coupled to a combustion chamber. The candle also comprises a focusing system of the received light pulses and a birefringent device adapted to be placed in the path of a focused pulse. The birefringent device is adapted to separate the incident beam in two distinct directions according to the polarization mode of the incident light. Such a birefringent device makes it possible to direct, alternately or simultaneously, a light beam received by the candle according to the invention at two distinct points of focus in the combustion chamber and to modulate the energy density at these two points.

Such a spark plug can be used in any type of internal combustion engine, and more specifically in engines requiring control of the ignition of combustion, such as direct or indirect injection spark ignition engines.

Figure 1 schematically illustrates the arrangement of an ignition system using a spark plug according to the invention in an internal combustion engine.

The ignition system comprises a laser source 2, pulse, capable of providing light pulses of short durations, preferably less than 20 ns, and high power, of the order of a few milli Joules per pulse. Such a laser may for example be of the Nd: YAG type pumped by diode. Such a laser ignition system can be powered by a motor vehicle battery 42V for example.

The ignition system also comprises an optical transmission means 3, such as an optical fiber adapted to transmit the pulses emitted by the laser 2 to an optical candle 1 according to the invention. Such an optical candle 1 constitutes a clean element of the system, that is to say distinct from the optical fiber 3.

Synchronization means 5 may be associated with the laser 2 in order to select the light pulses to be transmitted in the optical fiber 3 as a function of data from a microcontroller of the motor. Indeed, the light pulses are intended to be focused in the combustion chamber 4 for the ignition operation. However, the ignition depends on the type of engine and the state of the engine thermodynamic cycle.

According to one embodiment, the light pulses are emitted periodically and constantly by the laser 2 and are transmitted to the combustion chamber 4 only when the ignition operation is required. The synchronization means 5 may then comprise an electro-optical modulator or, for example, acousto-optic modulator. The modulator 5 is controlled by the microcontroller of the motor to couple or not the pulses emitted by the laser 2 into the optical fiber 3.

According to another embodiment, the laser 2 emits light pulses with a variable periodicity. The synchronization means 5 may then comprise a modulator of the laser pump, for example. The modulator 5 is controlled by the microcontroller of the motor to control the pulses emitted by the laser 2 in the optical fiber 3.

Means for controlling the polarization 21 of the laser 2 are also provided.

These means 21 may be integrated into the laser or placed at the output of the laser and allow transmission in the optical fiber 3 of polarized pulses according to one and / or the other mode of polarization of the light. The polarization control means 21 are also adapted to control the distribution of light energy in each of the polarization modes emitted. The polarization means 21 of the laser 2 may be of the passive type, such as birefringent blades, or of the active type, such as electro-optical modulators.

The system further comprises control means 17 adapted to act on the optical spark plug 1. These control means 17 may be linked to the microcontroller of the engine and are intended to allow treatment of the light pulses received by the spark plug 1 to ensure focusing light in the combustion chamber 4 at one or more specific points and with a controlled time sequence between said focuses.

Figure 2 illustrates a first embodiment of the candle according to the invention. Such a candle is a clean element of the ignition system, that is to say distinct from the optical fiber transmission laser pulses. The candle is contained in a housing 15 which comprises an optical input 12 adapted to be connected to the optical fiber 3 and an optical output 16 adapted to be coupled to the combustion chamber 4. For example, the housing 15 of the candle is screwed in the cylinder head 40 of the combustion chamber 4 of an internal combustion engine.

The candle 1 also comprises a focusing system 13 of the light pulses received. Such a focusing system 13 may comprise two lenses, one for collimating the optical beam coming from the fiber 3 and one for focusing this beam towards the output 16. The lenses 13 may be movable or have electrically variable focal lengths to modify the point of contact. focusing of the beam in the combustion chamber, and in particular the size of this focusing point and its distance from the edge of the combustion chamber. The lenses 13 can be actuated by the control means 17.

R: \ Patents \ 22400 \ 22473PSA.doc - 21/06/04 - 17:06 - 6/14 Thus, depending on the optical power of the pulse, the size of the focusing point, and therefore the energy density, can be adjusted by action on moving or variable-focus lenses. Especially during the cold start, ignition can be assured despite a low fuel vaporization by increasing the size of the focus point. In addition, unlike a conventional electric spark plug, the ignition point can be removed from the walls of the combustion chamber without intrusion into the latter.

The focus of the lenses of the focusing system 13 of the candle according to the invention 1 must be chosen carefully. Indeed, to create a plasma in the gas mixture of the combustion chamber, it is necessary that the focused energy density exceeds the threshold of 10 '1 W / cm 2. Thus, by regulating the focal length of the focusing lens 13, for example by the aforementioned control means 17, it is possible to increase or decrease the size of the laser spot at the focusing point and therefore the light energy density at this point. .

Thermal and Fluid Science, 2003. For a given energy and laser pulse duration, the focal length f of the lens 13, the diameter d, the divergence 9, and the wavelength A of the beam will influence the energy density at the focusing point. and therefore the effectiveness of the breakdown and ignition of the fuel mixture. Assuming the reasonable assumption that the laser beam is of the Gaussian type, the focusing zone is a cylinder of radius r and of length 1, such that: r = (2λ / n) * (f / d); 1 = (Nfrr-1) * (9 / d) * f It is therefore preferable to work with relatively short laser emission wavelengths to more easily reach the breakdown threshold. Moreover, to reduce the laser intensity required for ignition and reduce power consumption, it may be tempting to reduce the ignition volume by focusing on a smaller spot. However, it has been established that if the diameter of the laser spot at the point of focus is less than 20 μm, the energy threshold for ignition increases even if the breakdown threshold decreases. We can refer here to the work of Kopecek H. et al Laser ignition of methane-air mixture at high pressures, in Exp. Thermal and Fluid Science, 2003. In fact, for ignition to occur, energy losses by thermal diffusion at the cold surface of the flame during its initial propagation must be compensated for by the energy input. of the laser beam and the chemical reactions that occur in the ignition volume (around the focus point). It is thus possible to define a critical ignition radius, that is to say a minimum size of the focusing point, below which the energy contained in the initial plasma volume is too low R: 1Patches \ 22400 \ 22473PSA. doc - 21/06/04 - 17:06 - 7/14 to sufficiently initiate the chemical reactions for an efficient propagation of the flame nucleus.

The architecture of the candle 1, and in particular of its focusing system 13, must therefore be carefully calculated according to the laser source used, the fuel mixture to ignite and the mechanical stresses of the lens.

For example, a laser source delivers almost Gaussian pulses whose characteristics are as follows: M2 = 1.2 (beam form factor) a = 532 nm; T = 10 ns; d = 0.2 cm; E = 5mJ (in the case of multi-site ignition, if the laser delivers a pulse of 10 mJ, the available light energy for each focusing point is halved).

It is then possible to calculate the focal length f of the lens 13 allowing ignition under good conditions, knowing that the diameter D of the focusing point must not be less than 20 μm and that the energy density P at this point must be greater than 20 μm. 100GW / cm2. Assuming a Gaussian laser beam with the following equations: D = 4 * M2 * A * (f / rrd); and P = E / (n TD2 / 4); We deduce then, in the context of our numerical example, that f is between 4.9cm and 6.5cm.

To ignite a fuel mixture with optimal performance, do not necessarily seek to have a focal lens as short as possible, but rather adapt the focal length according to the laser used and the type of mixture to ignite. The control means 17 of the candle 1 can vary the focal length of the focusing system 13 for this purpose.

Furthermore, the candle according to the invention 1 may comprise a birefringent optical device 20 adapted to separate the incident beam in two distinct directions according to the polarization mode of the incident light. Such a birefringent device makes it possible to direct a light beam at two focusing points in the combustion chamber 4. If the incident beam is polarized in a first mode, the birefringent device 20 will refract the beam in a first direction for focusing. in a first given point of the combustion chamber. If the incident beam is polarized in a second mode, the birefringent device 20 will refract this beam in a second direction for focusing at a given second point in the chamber of R: \ Brevets'22400 \ 22473PSA.doc - 21 / 06/04 - 17:06 - 8/14 combustion. The birefringent device 20 can provide a resolution of the incident light wave and a refraction of a first and a second beam in the first and second directions for simultaneous focusing at two given distinct points of the combustion chamber.

The optical candle according to the invention thus makes it possible to ensure single or multi-site ignition at given points in a controlled manner.

The control of the polarization of the incident light beam is provided by the polarization control means 21 of the laser 2, the transmission optical fiber 3 not modifying the propagation modes of the light.

The birefringent device 20 may be permanently disposed on the optical path of the pulses passing through the optical spark plug according to the invention, the action of said device 20 on the incident beam being controlled by the polarization of the incident wave with the control means. of the polarization 21 of the laser 2.

According to the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 2, the birefringent device 20 is a Wollaston prism. Such a prism makes it possible to obtain a doubling of an incident beam containing the two modes of polarization in two monomode polarized beams in two directions each forming an angle α with the direction of the incident beam. If the incident beam is polarized, the Wollaston prism will refract all of the light energy in one or other of the aforementioned directions; and if the incident beam contains both polarization modes, the prism will ensure the beam splitting for simultaneous refraction in said two directions.

According to the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 3, the birefringent device 20 is a Thomson prism. Such a prism makes it possible to obtain a doubling of an incident beam containing the two modes of polarization in two monomode polarized beams in two directions, a first direction coinciding with the direction of the incident beam and a second direction forming an angle α with the direction. incident beam. If the incident beam is polarized, the Thomson prism will refract all of the light energy in one or other of the aforementioned directions; and if the incident beam contains both polarization modes, the prism will ensure the beam splitting for simultaneous refraction in said two directions.

Other embodiments may be envisaged for producing the birefringent optical device 20, such as a simple spatial displacement of the two ordinary and extraordinary beams relative to each other without angle variation.

The ignition system for an internal combustion engine according to the invention operates in the following manner.

According to the control of the motor, the microcontroller triggers the control of the laser source 2 which delivers light pulses and adjusts the synchronization system 5 to let one or more given pulses enter the optical fiber 3. The synchronization system thus aligns the laser repetition rate with the ignition frequency of the engine. Such synchronization depends directly on the type of engine considered and can be adjusted by a person skilled in the art according to the application envisaged, gasoline engines, direct injection, operating lean or stratified mode, or other.

The pulse or pulses introduced into the optical fiber 3 are then brought to the spark plug 1. The light pulse is then focused by the spark plug 1 at one or more given points of the combustion chamber 4.

The focusing of a laser pulse in the gas mixture will cause, in a manner known per se, the ionization of certain atoms of the mixture and the appearance of an electronic cascade phenomenon to form a plasma. During this process, the first electrons of the plasma are created by multiphoton ionization and / or by absorption and heating of the impurities in the gas mixture. These electrons are then accelerated by the electromagnetic field of the laser beam and thus gain kinetic energy. The accelerated electrons collide with other atoms of the mixture and new free electrons are then created and accelerated. An avalanche effect, or electronic cascade, forms a plasma. The medium, initially transparent to light, becomes adsorbent and heats up. The temperature of the fuel mixture and the number of precursor radicals then increase rapidly and when the volume of the induced photo plasma is sufficiently large, the combustion starts in a few hundred nanoseconds.

The focusing lenses 13 of the candle may be actuated by the control system 17 to focus the laser beam at a point located at a given distance from the optical candle, with a given focus size.

According to a single or single-site ignition mode, the candle 1 focuses the incident beam at a single point in the combustion chamber. For this purpose, the polarization control means 21 of the laser 2 select one or the other mode of propagation of the light for the optical beam emitted in the optical fiber 3. The incident beam is then focused by the lenses 13 of the optical candle, as described above, then refracted by the birefringent device 20 in one or the other direction according to the polarization of the incident beam.

According to another embodiment, the laser 2 can emit a beam that contains both polarization modes, and the control means 17 of the R: 113revets12 2 4 0012 2 473PSA.doc - 21/06/04 - 17: 06 - 10/14 candle 1 can operate the birefringent device 20 to separate it from the optical path of the output 16 of the candle.

In the single ignition mode, the combustion rate of the mixture and the fuel efficiency of the engine can be improved by the laser ignition.

According to a multi-site ignition mode, the candle 1 simultaneously focuses the incident beam at two given points of the combustion chamber. For this purpose, the control means of the polarization 21 of the laser 2 allow the emission in the optical fiber 3 of an optical beam containing the two modes of polarization in proportions defining the relative intensities of the two beams. The incident beam is then focused by the lenses 13 of the optical candle, then split by the birefringent device 20 into an ordinary wave refracted in a first direction and an extraordinary wave refracted in a second direction, as described above.

The candle 1 according to the invention is thus adapted to simultaneously focus two light pulses at given points of the combustion chamber. The focusing lenses 13 of the candle can be actuated by the control system 17 to change the sizes and distances of these focusing points.

The simultaneous focusing of two laser beams at two given points of the combustion chamber makes it possible to increase the volume of the ignition zone and to improve ignition in an engine operating in stratified or lean mode mode.

The transition from one mode to another is provided by the control means of the polarization 21 of the laser 2 which becomes a new engine control parameter. According to the operating speed of the motor, the microcontroller controls the polarization control means 21. Simultaneously, the motor microcontroller can also control the lenses 13 of the optical spark plug 1 to effectively control the ignition points in the combustion chamber .

Of course, the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described by way of example; thus, the birefringent device can be chosen from any device capable of separating the incident beam in two distinct directions depending on the polarization mode of the incident beam. Similarly, the various control means, 17, 21, associated with the spark plug 1 or with the ignition system according to the invention can be adapted according to the engines for which they are intended.
