DETECTION OF SPACE DEBRIS IN ORBIT FROM A
INSTRUMENT ON BOARD ON SATELLITE GENERAL TECHNICAL AREA AND STATE OF THE ART
The invention relates to the detection of small space debris in orbit around the Earth.

Space debris is a major threat to artificial satellites. Because of their size - which varies from a few tenths of a millimeter to a few meters - and their speed - which can be of the order of 10 km / s) - space debris can constitute projectiles that are particularly damaging to satellites we know that the cost of these is particularly high.

However, the number of space debris continues to increase. This is due to the fact that there are more and more satellite launches - the latter constituting as many new sources of debris - and also to the fact that collisions between debris and satellites lead to the formation of other debris.

Debris varying in size from a few tens of centimeters to a few meters can be detected from ground observation stations, notably telescopes or radars.

Systems on board satellites have also been proposed, in particular radar systems.

Such systems, which are a priori only known in the design stage, have the advantage of making it possible to determine the speed and position of the debris.

Pourtant, en 1998, on Telescopic terrestrial systems and radar systems - whether on-board or not - have the disadvantage for some of not making it possible to detect small debris, the size of which varies from a few tenths of a millimeter to a few centimeters. However, in 1998, we

<Desc/Clms Page number 2><Desc / Clms Page number 2>

On-board radar systems would also have the disadvantage of being active systems that consume a lot of power and of not allowing trajectory determination.

To date, generally used to detect these small debris impact detectors on board the satellites. These impact detectors are in the form of plates mounted outside of artificial satellites. When debris hits these plates, an impact is formed. The number of debris and their speed are determined by examining the characteristics of these impacts.

However, such impact detection devices have the disadvantage of having limited detection surfaces, of the order of a few square centimeters, and consequently of not making it possible to collect a large number of impacts. In addition, these devices must be recovered and brought back to Earth for analysis.

PRESENTATION DE L'INVENTION. PRESENTATION OF THE INVENTION.

An object of the invention is to provide a debris detection system, which allows the detection of small debris, without having the drawbacks of impact detection devices.

To this end, the invention proposes a device for detecting small space debris, capable of being carried on an artificial satellite and using passive detection techniques, that is to say with low energy consumption.

Thus, the invention provides an instrument capable of being carried on a satellite, characterized in that it includes passive optical detection means capable of optically detecting the presence of debris (9) near the satellite.

Avantageusement, les moyens de détection optique passifs comportent au moins deux matrices de photodétecteurs ainsi que des moyens obturateurs commandés pour définir pour lesdites matrices de photodétecteurs une succession de temps d'acquisition, ledit instrument  Advantageously, the passive optical detection means comprise at least two arrays of photodetectors as well as shutter means controlled to define for said arrays of photodetectors a succession of acquisition times, said instrument

<Desc/Clms Page number 3><Desc / Clms Page number 3>

Such an instrument is advantageously supplemented by the following different characteristics, taken alone or in combination: - the shutter means comprise an image intensifier tube; - It includes means for generating a modulated control voltage which is applied to the image intensifier tube and which defines the succession of acquisition times; the shutter means are controlled with a succession of acquisition times which corresponds to a frequency of the order of one or several hundred KHz.

- the photodetectors are charge transfer photodetectors.

As will be understood, the instrument proposed by the invention makes it possible to detect small debris (size between 0.1 and 1000 mm) invisible from the ground and to characterize them by measuring in particular their distance from the satellite, their trajectory, their speed and possibly their size by rapid and very sensitive detection, while meeting the constraints of satellites, that is to say by proposing a device with a small spatial requirement and capable of operating with a limited available electrical power.

EXAMPLE OF IMPLEMENTATION
The instrument, referenced by 1 in the figures, comprises, on a microsatellite 4, two optical objectives 2,3 each associated with image capture means 6 and with a fast shutter 5.

Les moyens 6 sont avantageusement des caméras CCD.  The means 6 are advantageously CCD cameras.

The fast shutter 5 is advantageously an image intensifier tube, the control voltage of which is varied, which voltage is a voltage applied to a photocathode 10 of said intensifier tube 5.

The voltage of the photocathode 10 is in particular controlled by modulation means 11, which for example modulate said voltage in a sinusoidal manner.

The instrument further comprises processing means 7 able to carry out processing on the images acquired by the image capture means 6, as well as means 8 for supplying electric current which are, for example, solar batteries. and which are connected to the different means of instrument 1.

Such an instrument makes it possible to detect small debris, shown diagrammatically by the debris 9 in FIG. 1. It also makes it possible to determine the position and the speed of this debris 9.

To this end, its operation is as follows.

When debris passes through the field of objectives 2 and 3, the sunlight reflected by the debris 9 is collected by said objectives 2 and 3.

At times when the shutters 5 are not closed, they amplify the light thus collected, so that the CCD cameras 6 acquire images of the debris 9.

At each acquisition time, the processing means 7 process the two images thus obtained so as, for example by triangulation on the barycenters of the debris, to deduce therefrom the distance at which the debris is in relation to the satellite 4. The time of CCD integration is chosen much longer than the opening / closing time. For each image obtained, the shutter will have opened and closed a large number of times.

<Desc/Clms Page number 5> <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

The speed of the debris is also determined by processing the images obtained for the same debris for two successive acquisition times.

Note that the speed of the debris - which can go up to 30 km / simulates a high frequency modulation (of the order of a few hundred kHz).

Knowing for each pixel point the distance of the debris 9 and the date of its passage, it is then possible to reconstruct its trajectory and to determine its size.

As will be understood, the use of CCD cameras is particularly advantageous: it guarantees a very good spatial resolution, which is given by the matrix structure of CCD cameras 6. In addition, CCD cameras 6 have an excellent signal / signal ratio noise.

It will also be noted that the structure which has just been described does not require complex electronic means.

The instrument proposed by the invention is therefore of a particularly simple structure which enables it to meet the constraints of minimum space requirement of the satellites.

In addition, as the electronics of the single device is very simple, and since natural sunlight is used for lighting debris, the instrument according to the invention consumes little electrical power, which is also a criterion. important for an instrument intended to be carried on a satellite.
