Abstract

A map display device comprises means to receive and display a map 102 corresponding to the location of the device and orientation determining means 109 so that the map is displayed with the same orientation as the device. Names and labels are arranged so that they are legible whatever the orientation of the map. The display device is preferably a mobile phone which receives map data via GSM. GPS is preferably used to establish the location of the device. The orientation determining means may be in the form of an electronic compass 109 which determines the direction of magnetic north. Also claimed is a mobile phone with magnetic north determining means enabling this to be displayed on the phone's screen.
