Abstract

The material consists of two or more layers of different filaments, (1,3-8), laid one on top of another in different directions and associated with a matrix (2,9,12). At least one of the layers of elementary filaments is in the form of reinforcing filaments (11), e.g. of aramid, polyethylene or polyamide, which alternate with matrix filaments (12). The material also incorporates binding filaments (10) which join the different layers together. The matrix can be in the form of at least one layer of a thermoplastic film which is placed at the heart of the filament layers, or it can be made by impregnating or coating the filament layers with a resin. The complex material can be used to make a three-dimensional article, such as a protective helmet, by cutting and shaping. ADVANTAGE - Increased resistance to bullets and other projectiles.

Description

"Ballistic protection shield, and its application"
The present invention relates to a ballistic protection armor, having a composite structure, this armor suitable for stopping firearms projectiles being produced from textile materials and being able to be shaped, for particular applications, this invention s applying more particularly, but not exclusively, to the production of helmets.

Current composite shields are formed by the association of reinforcing fibers such as aramid fiber, nylon fiber, glass fiber, polyethylene fiber, linked together by a matrix which can be
- a thermosetting matrix: polyester, phenolic resin, epoxy, vinylester
- a thermoplastic matrix: polyethylene, polyamide, polypropylene.

The fibers themselves come in different forms of textile architecture, in particular in the form of biaxial fabrics or monoaxial sheets.

Biaxial fabrics, such as taffeta, twill, satin, by definition even have the disadvantage of having a tangle between warp and weft threads.

This has the effect, during the impact of a projectile, of using only a short length of the wire reached to absorb the energy of the impact; the maximum elongation and the limit of tensile strength are quickly reached, due to the "embedding" of the wire by the warp-weft connections.

The monoaxial plies, on the other hand, favor the use of the wire in its entire length, but their wires deviate under the action of penetration of the projectile, and the "net" effect of the biaxial tissues is thus eliminated.

The present invention aims to eliminate the respective drawbacks of the two structures previously discussed, namely the biaxial tissues and the monoaxial plies, while combining their advantages, in order to improve the ballistic performance of the armorings of the genus considered, and also allowing a optimal implementation in various applications.

To this end, the subject of the invention is essentially a ballistic protection shielding which is constituted by a complex multiaxial fabric, resulting from at least two superposed layers of layers of elementary wires having distinct orientations, associated with a matrix.

The nature of the threads may be different or identical, within the same ply or between several superposed plies. The incorporation of aramid, polyethylene or polyamide yarns as reinforcement yarns is particularly recommended. The orientations of the plies between them are diverse, the directions of the threads being able, from one ply to another, to form angles of +300, 1450, +600, 900, etc., making it possible to distinguish directions of threads " string "," weft "," bias ".

The cohesion of each ply, as well as the connection of the different plies together, is advantageously produced by a binding wire, a true seam of the complex, which can represent 1 to 2% of the total mass.

Fabrics of this kind, but not hitherto intended for ballistic applications, are already commercially available and, in this regard, there may be mentioned, for example, the products "DUFTECH" and "4 DIR" (registered trademarks) of the DUFLOT INDUSTRIE, or the "LYVERTEX" (registered trademark) product of the Company
BROCHIER SA. Weaving methods and machines capable of producing these complex multiaxial fabrics are also known.

The association of the matrix with the multiaxial complex tissue proper can be carried out according to several methods, belonging to one of the following major categories: textile methods, impregnation methods, coating methods.

A first textile process consists in constituting at least one elementary ply of the fabric by the association of cotton-coated thermoplastic threads with reinforcing threads. A variant consists in placing at least one thermoplastic film within the different layers of the multiaxial complex fabric during weaving, this film forming the matrix.

According to an impregnation process, the complex multiaxial fabric is impregnated with liquid resin such as vinylester, polyester or phenolic resin, according to the techniques used on twill, taffeta, etc. It is also possible to impregnate the threads with a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin before making the complex multiaxial fabric.

In coating processes, the thermoplastic resin supplied in the liquid phase is deposited on the complex multiaxial fabric.

In addition to the improved ballistic performance, complex multiaxial fabrics produced as indicated above have excellent deformability properties, although they are heavy fabrics. Consequently, the invention is more particularly applicable to the production of armored objects having a three-dimensional geometric configuration requiring the shaping of an initially planar cut, examples of typical application being helmets and helicopter seats.

The shaping of these complex multiaxial fabrics can be carried out on a press provided with an inflatable membrane and an imprint corresponding for example to the shape of a helmet. This shaping can also be carried out by other methods, such as stamping.

The deformability of the fabrics in question makes it possible to create non-developable surfaces, such as helmet caps, while minimizing the loss of material while improving ballistic performance.

Thus, the use of traditional textile materials requires making, for the manufacture of a helmet, "patterns" to cut and assemble with overlays, which are very penalizing for the yield of material, the surface losses still reaching in the best case around 30%.

The use of a complex multiaxial fabric, deformed on a press or by stamping to make a helmet, makes it possible to limit falls to around 10%.

In addition, a helmet thus produced has a homogeneous structure, so that the variations in ballistic performance are very small from one point to another, over the entire surface of the helmet.

More particularly, in addition to ballistic stopping performance, helmets must limit the trauma due to the impact of a projectile; the criterion generally used to verify this quality is the volume of the deformation cone inside the helmet, at the level of the impact. Helmets made with conventional fabrics have very important cones in this regard, this due to the propagation of the break along the cutting areas of the "patterns". On the contrary, the complex multiaxial fabric shaped preserves the continuity of the fibers over the entire surface of the helmet, hence greater absorption of energy, which causes trauma.

Figure 1 shows a complex fabric, composed of a number of layers of elementary threads, from top to bottom
- a ply 1 of wires oriented in the "warp" direction,
- an upper matrix 2,
a sheet 3 of wires oriented in the "weft" direction,
a sheet 4 of wires oriented obliquely,
another layer 5 of wires oriented in the "weft" direction,
another layer 6 of wires oriented obliquely,
- a last layer 7 of wires oriented in the "weft" direction,
- a last layer 8 of wires oriented obliquely,
- a lower matrix 9.

These different layers, superimposed, are assembled together by means of a binding wire 10.

In the plies 4, 6 and 8 of threads oriented obliquely, there is an alternation of reinforcing threads 11 made of aramid or glass, and of thermoplastic threads 12 forming a matrix.

FIG. 2 shows another complex multiaxial fabric, produced according to the same principle but with fewer plies of threads. This figure clearly shows the angle A between the directions of the wires of two consecutive layers.

FIG. 3 indicates, more precisely than FIG. 1, the binding wire 10 joining the sheets of a complex multiaxial fabric such as that of FIG. 2.

For the production of a helmet benefiting from the ballistic properties of the fabric in question, an initially flat cutout 13 is produced, as shown in FIG. 4. The shaping of this cutout, on a press or by stamping, makes it possible to obtain a helmet cap 14, as shown in FIG. 5, without covering or loss of material.

For comparison, Figures 6 and 7 illustrate the manufacture of a ballistic helmet from conventional fabrics. FIG. 6 shows the basic shapes obtained by assembling cutouts 15 and 16 previously produced according to a pre-established "pattern". FIG. 7 illustrates the overlap of the cutouts 15 and 16, after the two basic shapes have been combined.

It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to the sole embodiments of this ballistic protection armor which have been described above, by way of examples; on the contrary, it embraces all of the variant embodiments and applications respecting the same principle. Thus, in particular, that one would not depart from the scope of the invention by modifications of detail of the fabric, concerning for example the number of plies of threads and / or their orientation, as long as the principle use of a complex multiaxial tissue is preserved. Similarly, the scope of this shielding is not limited to helmets and also includes other uses, such as helicopter seats.
