Abstract

Petroleum cement slag containing, as specific additives, a combination of sodium silicate and of sodium polynaphthalenesulphonate. This system is particularly insensitive to temperature while retaining the properties required from petroleum cements. Application to deep wells for surface cementation.

Description

Composition of petroleum cement, corresponding additives and application to surface setting.

The present invention relates to the technique of cementing oil, gas, water, geothermal and similar wells.

We know that this technique consists in pumping the slag with cement in the casing of the well; the cement slag thus drives out the drilling mud and replaces it in the ring finger, where the cement sets in order to isolate the zones crossed by the well and to stiffen the well itself.

The cement slag is therefore subjected to a large temperature variation, from the surface temperature to the maximum well bottom temperature and, for part of the cement, with return to the surface temperature.

In some deep wells, this problem is particularly acute because the temperature difference is so great that taking the slag in the area of the ring finger close to the surface poses problems that are extremely difficult to solve.

Indeed, the problem then consists in strongly delaying the setting of the cement when the slag is subjected to the maximum temperature (BHCT or circulation temperature at the bottom of the well. "Bottomhole Circulating
Temperature ") without, however, the means used for delaying setting at high temperature do not prevent this same setting for the fraction of the cement slag which rises close to the surface.

It is easy to see that the two imperatives are completely antagonistic and no satisfactory system could be proposed for deep wells.

The problem has worsened for the petroleum industry with the tendency more and more marked to drill wells more and more deep, more and more hot, and provided with casings ("liners") more and more long.

The API ("American Petroleum Institute") was therefore led to establish standard procedures for measuring the compressive strength at the top of a high column of cement.

The invention proposes a solution to the problem posed, with a particular application to geothermal wells whose temperature gradient is, as is known, particularly high.

The cement slags according to the invention exhibit a surprising set of properties, in particular - setting time ("thickening time") controllable in a BHCT range of around 60 to 2000 (110-400 F); - minimum resistance to surface compression of
approx. 42 kg / cm2 (500 psi) within 48 hours after being
subject to the placement temperature at the bottom of
well for 1 h (API procedure).

- filtrat ("fluid loss") inférieur à 50 ml/30 min
(norme API), pour des BHCT pouvant atteindre 1800C
( 3600F); inferieur à 100 ml/30 min (norme API)
pour des BHCT pouvant atteindre de 180 à 2000C (360 à
- filtrate ("fluid loss") less than 50 ml / 30 min
(API standard), for BHCT up to 1800C
(3600F); less than 100 ml / 30 min (API standard)
for BHCT up to 180 to 2000C (360 to
4000F). The addition of a filtrate control agent depends on local conditions.

l'invention.
Naturally, the other properties required of a good
petroleum cement slag (density, rheology and
analogues) are not negatively affected by
the invention.

Without wishing to be bound by any theory, he
sodium silicate appears to be responsible for
surprising surface setting properties, in combination with a dispersant such as polynaphthalene
sodium sulfonate (PNS).

Laboratory procedure
In a pressurized consistometer, the slag tested is heated to the BHCT, and is kept at this temperature for 1 h.

It is then cooled by a water circulation system, in the consistometer, before being placed in a cement analysis device by ultrasonic method where it continues to cool down to 270C (800F) (considered as a temperature of surface) under 1 atm. The compressive strength is recorded continuously from this point.

All the tests revealed the results presented above, with temperature differences between the BHCT and the surface temperature of up to approximately 1600C (3200F).

The final compressive strength is correct (approx. 140 kg / cm2; 2000 psi) both at the surface and under the well bottom conditions.

Surface uptake is obtained after approximately 12-20 h (for a BHCT of approximately 60 to 1000, i.e. 140 to 2120F) or after approximately 30 h for higher BHCT.

As indicated above, the control of the filtrate is excellent, even at high temperature.

De plus, le système est stable. In addition, the system is stable.

Beyond the ability of the systems according to the invention to take to the surface despite a very high temperature gradient, it has been noted that these systems are particularly insensitive to temperature.

This characteristic, which it should be emphasized that clearly exceeds the concept of surface grip "is extremely important. In many situations it is indeed difficult to measure the BHCT, or else the casing / liner can be lowered deeper than expected etc ... and it is obvious that a temperature insensitive system then has the enormous advantage of either supporting the BHCT whatever it is, or supporting without risk for the cementing operation any inaccuracy of measurement or calculation of the BHCT, in particular even if the BHCT is deliberately overestimated.

The systems according to the invention are exclusively based on fresh water.

Sodium silicate had previously been used to obtain a surface setting but never for differences in temperature between the bottom and the surface as large as those achieved according to the invention.

The invention, thanks to this very significant increase in the acceptable temperature difference on tall columns of cement, therefore in fact opens this technique to cementing operations, in particular in geothermal applications, which were previously prohibited to it.

Selon l'invention, on utilise une combinaison de silicate de sodium, et de polynaphtalène sulphonate de sodium (dispersant).According to the invention, a combination of sodium silicate and sodium polynaphthalene sulphonate (dispersant) is used.

This combination is made responsible for the very clear increase in the acceptable temperature difference between the bottom and the surface, compared to the prior art.

Depending on local requirements, conventional proportions of additives for petroleum cements known to those skilled in the art can be incorporated.

Mention will in particular be made of a setting retarder of the glucoheptonate (preferred) or phosphonate type.

silicate de Na : 4,5 - 27 1/t de ciment
(0,05 - 0,3 gal/sk)

PNS : 4,5 - 13 1/t de ciment
(0,05 - 0,15 gal/sk)
