Abstract

A rear-view mirror (1) fitted in a vehicle has a rearward reflecting face (4). The outer face (2) of its structure incorporates a number of solar cells which are normally exposed to the sun. Power developed in the cells, which are connected in series, is fed to the vehicle's battery through wiring housed in the mirror's support (3). A series diode is included so that the battery cannot discharge through the cells if they are inactivated due to darkness. In practice, a trickle charge is provided for the battery during most daylight hours. Parking near a street light can generate a supply even at night. ADVANTAGE - Cell-equipped mirror uses sun's rays to provide constant trickle charge for installed batteries, and is of particular value in those vehicles which receive only infrequent use. Mirror functions are unaffected.

Description

DESCRIPTIF
DESCRIPTION
The system according to the invention relates, as a new industrial product, to an automobile rearview mirror acting as a solar battery charger.

It is composed of a box f of any material (plastic, metal, alloy, etc.). The so-called inside face of this box 4 consists of a mirror I acting as an interior mirror (FIG. I and 3) .The so-called external face of this shoemaker 4 consists of one or more photovoltaic cells acting as solar collector 2 (FIG. 2 and 3). Depending on the type of vehicle, the fixing of this device is ensured by a tab 5 located on the upper (FIG. I, 2 and 3 for the example) or lower part of the casing 4. The interior of the casing 4 contains the wiring of the photovoltaic cells 6, as well as a non-return diode 5, preventing discharge of the battery overnight. FIG. 4, 5 and 6, shows by way of example the pitch of the solar collector according to the type and therefore the number of photovoltaic cells 6 used to obtain an output voltage to the battery of I2 Volts.

The advantages of such a device are as follows:
-no loss of visibility, the surface occupied by the solar collector being included in that of the mirror.

-Perfect insulation of the solar collector, since it is located above the wipers.

-Continuous charging of the battery, from daybreak to dusk at night.

-In the case of use of amorphous silicon photovoltaic cells, possibility of charging the battery even overnight, if the vehicle is parked near a light source (street lamp for example) of air less 20 Lux.

The system according to the invention is intended for all motor vehicles and in particular for motorists driving a low daily mileage, or using their vehicle only rarely.
