Abstract

The umbrella includes ribs (4) which are made of a synthetic transparent material, connected to a central hub on the shaft (1). The hub includes a lamp (9) powered from batteries within the handle or shaft of the umbrella. Light from the lamp is transmitted by the ribs, and dissipated from the surface of the ribs, and from the ends. There may be a small mirror at the end of each rib, and each rib may be hollow, accommodating a quantity of luminescent or fluorescent material.
