Abstract

This invention brings an improvement in performance to rotary mono-bloc bits for boring in rocks at great depths. The characteristic feature of the invention is the special setting out of the thermostable polycrystalline diamonds inside compact segments obtained by sintering: these segments serving as cutting units are connected to a steel body. The interest of the invention consists in being able to manufacture, easily in a factory and therefore more cheaply, steel bits exhibiting a cutting structure in thermostable diamonds. <IMAGE>

Description

 The present invention relates to a rotary monobloc steel drill bit comprising cutting elements reported by recess in the body of the tool. More particularly, this invention relates to bits having a thermostable polycrystalline abrasive as a cutting or abrasive material.

 The thermostable polycrystalline diamond is a solid composed of synthetic diamond crystals agglomerated by a sintering process that withstands temperatures of 1100-C.

The high thermal resistance of the thermostable diamond makes it suitable for drilling moderately hard to hard consolidated rocks.

 The usual forms of thermostable polycrystalline diamonds are polyhedra whose bases are either triangular or rectangular, and rectangular sides.

 Polycrystalline thermostable diamond should be distinguished from polycrystalline diamond agglomerated in plates on a substrate; the latter, which only withstands up to 700 ° C, is used as a cutter for shear drilling in soft rocks.

 Heat-stable polycrystalline diamonds are commonly used as a cutting element for conventional diamond drill bits obtained by powder metallurgy, ie by infiltration of alloys between tungsten carbide grains, which makes it possible to obtain a hard surface which encases the diamonds on the active parts of the tool.

 The process of manufacturing powder metallurgy on large surfaces is expensive. It has been found that it is economically more cost-effective to manufacture steel drill bits and to bring the cutting elements back to the active surface by an assembly process such as brazing or fitting.

 Technological difficulties and design difficulties are encountered in bringing thermostable diamonds to steel tools.

 The tool object of the present invention solves these difficulties and makes it possible to assemble cutters containing thermostable diamonds on steel drill bits.

 The body of the tool according to the present invention is constituted by a steel support of hollow cylindrical shape, one end of which terminates in a connecting thread with the drill rods, the other end, which constitutes the front part. , on the one hand, there are projecting radial surfaces on which are housed recesses for embedding sintered segments containing thermally stable diamonds, on the other hand, orifices and recessed channels for the passage of the drilling fluid serving evacuation of rock debris.

 The particularity of the invention resides, in the specific shape of the segments, in the arrangement of heat-stable diamonds inside the sintered segments, and in the mode of embedding the segments.

 The sintered segments for thermostable diamond support have a protruding edge formed by the intersection of two perpendicular plane surfaces, this edge is arranged tangentially to the rotation of the tool.

The shape of the segments is elongated with a plane leading edge at one end and a rounded trailing edge at the other end.

 The thermostable diamonds are arranged to have a large arete coincident with the protruding edge of the sintered segment. The segments may have one or more thermostable diamonds aligned on the edge of the same cutting element. To make the segment more resistant to abrasion it is possible to integrate, either on the surface or in the mass, other natural or synthetic diamonds.

 The diamond segments are embedded in grooves of the tool body of the same shape as the base of the segments and soldered together.

 The trepan is a steel body or support (1) connected to the rods by a thread <2> having, a lateral part formed by cylindrical surfaces <3> serving to guide the tool, orifices <4> serving injecting the drilling fluid on the front part, recesses <5) for channeling the washing of the face, radial diamond ranges <6) having cutting elements which are sintered segments <7> having a sharp edge < 8> formed by two sections that intersect at right angles, this edge is arranged tangentially to the rotation of the tool, the segments have a cutting edge (9) of planar shape and a trailing edge <10> having the shape of a half-cone and a half-cylinder, the segments are brazed in grooves <11> arranged in the body of the tool tangentially to the rotation, the grooves are open in the channels (5) on the leading edge and not emerging on the trailing edge so that the groove base can serve as a mounting support, the segments <7) contain thermostable diamonds (12> crimped so as to coincide a large cutting edge of the diamond with that of the segment, the segments may comprise one or more thermostable diamonds, other diamonds, natural or synthetic, may also be crimped in reinforcement in the sintered segment either in suface or in the mass.

 According to one variant, the drill bit does not destroy the central part and is in the form of a coring ring.

Claims (3)

 1 - rotary drill bit and monobloc drill consisting of a steel body (1> having at one end a thread <2>, cylindrical side surfaces (3), and at the other end an active portion having holes or irrigation (4), and radial diamond lands (6) consisting of sintered diamond segments (7> soldered to the body of the tool, these elongated segments have a protruding edge <8> formed by the intersection of two perpendicular planar surfaces, characterized in that the shape of the segments <7) has a flat leading edge (9) and a trailing edge <10> rounded along a half-cone and a half-cylinder, edge <8) is arranged tangentially to the rotation of the tool, the segments encase at least one thermostable polycrystalline diamond (12) so that a large diamond edge coincides with the protruding edge of the segment, segments are encased in grooves s of the same shape as the base of the segments.
