Abstract

Installation includes a cleaning machine in which the prod. is passed between a pair of superimposed, openwork, endless conveying bands, e.g. with spaced, transverse slats. The opposed faces of the two bands travel in opposite directions. The bands interface is inclined to the horizontal, prod. being fed in at the upper end. One of the bands is resiliently mounted in a frame which is pivoted on a transverse, horizontal axis. A soil-removing machine is installed upstream or downstream of the cleaning machine. In the soil remover, prod. rides over elastomeric beating rotors fixed on parallel, transverse, rotating shafts. Debris falling through the soil remover and the cleaning bands is carried away by a conveyor belt extending full-length beneath those two machines. When the openwork bands are made up of transverse slats, the slat spacing if pref. adjustable. The slats are pref. rubber-covered or coated with similar elastomeric material. Used for cleaning root vegetables, tubers etc. without manual labour and without requiring vast quantities of water previously required for soil removal.

Description

The present invention relates to an apparatus for cleaning endive carrots, tubers and roots.

Until now, mechanical and automatic devices have not been known, working at a fixed station to clean endive carrots, tubers and roots.

Indeed, Up to now cleaning, that is to say the elimination of soil was carried out manually, which takes a long time and is very expensive and therefore does not allow a satisfactory yield.

Attempts have already been made to clean endive carrots, tubers and roots using means requiring the application of water. However, such a process involves the use of very large amounts of water, which is also not suitable.

In the accompanying drawings in which the same reference symbols designate similar parts, 1 represents the upper conveyor of the apparatus and 2 is the lower conveyor of the apparatus. The products to be cleaned 4 are conveyed between said two conveyors 1, 2 which are provided with bars 8 according to a skeleton assembly.

The conveyor 1 is adjustable in height, it is articulated and supported by elastic means 3. A pivoting support 5 around an axis 6 fixed on the chassis 7 of the device makes it possible to articulate the conveyor 1 according to the nature and the quantity of products to be cleaned 4. The conveyor 2 rests on supports 11 so that the bars 8 are not arched in order to allow appropriate rotation of the products to be cleaned 4. The assembly consisting of the two conveyors 1, 2 works in association with a star deterrent 18 provided with a plurality of stars 14. As is easily understood, the conveyors 1 and 2 ensure perfect stripping of the products to be cleaned by eliminating the major part of the earth and the star deterror ensures the total elimination of the amount of soil that is likely to remain.

In Figure 2 which is a top view of the apparatus, 15 denotes a drawbar for towing the apparatus of the invention. 17 illustrates a part of the tensioning system of the conveyor 2, more particularly a set of rollers coated with rubber. In 16 there are shown the wheels which serve to propel the apparatus when desired.

It is important to note that the elastic means 3, illustrated in the form of springs in FIG. 3, are liable to vary as regards their dimensions, their characteristics according to the variation in height which it is desired to obtain which is a function of the products to be cleaned 4 The star scavenger 18 has its various stars 14 mounted on shafts 13 and of which five have been represented in FIG. 3. The earth and the detritus eliminated by the two conveyors 1 and 2 as well as by the scavenger 18 with stars 14 fall. on a waste evacuation conveyor 12 having a width equivalent or substantially equivalent to the stars 14 and the conveyors 1,2, said waste evacuation conveyor 12 being placed below the conveyors 1, 2 and of the stars 14 and serving to collect the collected waste.

FIG. 4 illustrates the engine system and the transmission means of the two conveyors 1, 2 and of the deterrer 18 with stars 14.

FIG. 5 illustrates the articulation and suspension system of the conveyor 1.

Figures 6 and 7 show respectively in cross section and in longitudinal section a bar 8 covered with an elastic material 10 with internal grooving. The elastic material is preferably polyvinyl chloride, however other similar substances are also suitable. In an apparatus according to the present invention, substantially 150 bars are provided, 70 in the upper part and 80 in the lower part.

It is important to note that the two conveyors 1, 2 which rotate in the opposite direction can be adjusted as to their speed at will according to the nature of the products to be cleaned 4. This assembly rotating in the opposite direction makes it possible to rotate the cores on themselves. endives, tubers and ra cives thus making cleaning much more effective, by freeing the soil stuck to the carrots of endives, tubers and roots which is evacuated through the bars 8.

The conveyors 1 and 2 can be arranged both in a horizontal position and in an inclined position.

The invention is not limited to the embodiments shown and described in detail and various technical equivalents can be provided without departing from its scope.
