Abstract

The alloys have the compsns. (by wt.) (a) 3.0-7.5 (pref. 4.0-6.0)% Ni, 0.5-4.0 (pref. 1.0-3.0)% Sn, 0.001-1.0 (pref. 0.1-0.5)% Mn, bal. Cu and opt. 0.01-2.0% of one or more of As, Sb and P, or (b) 3.0-7.5 (pref. 4.0-6.0)% Ni, 0.5-4 (pref. 1.0-3.0)% Sn, up to 4 (pref. 2.0-3.0)% Al, 0.001-1.0 (pref. 0.1-0.5)% Mn, 0.01-2.0% As sand/or Sb, balance Cu. The alloys are useful as a construction material, in furniture and decorative applications and esp. as a replacement for Alloy 706, in various water applications e.g. heat exchanger tubing. The alloy have equivalent or greater corrosion resistance compared with Alloy 706 in potable, brackfish and cooling tower water and are cheaper because of the reduced Ni content. The alloys also have a low initial corrosion rate to minimise soluble Cu release to the environment on start-up of tubing systems.
