Abstract

Prodn. of bisphenols comprises reacting, in the presence of an acidic condensing agent, (a) a phenol having a reactive hydrogen para to the phenolic hydroxyl and (b) a cpd. of formula (I), (II), (III) and/or (IV): R and R1 are H, lower alkyl or aryl, X is lower alkoxy or the same as X', Y is Cl or the same as X, X' is aryloxy, n = 3-9, m=n-1, and Z (not defined in the Claims), is 1,2-or 1,3-propylenedioxy (opt. substd. with lower alkyl, lower hydroxyalkyl or hydroxy) or arylenedioxy. The process gives excellent yields of highly pure bisphenols.
