Abstract

The working consists esp. of forging, drawing, stamping or rolling. The working surfaces of the tool or die are sulphurised at high temp. before use. The die surface must be made of a material which is not impaired by heating to at least the sulphurisation temp.; and during hot working, the die surface is lubricated by a material counteracting wear and contg. a dry metal disulphide. The pref. lubricant is MoS2 and/or WS2 when billets are being hot forged. The lubricating material pref. contains 0.01-5 wt.% of the metal disulphide, and also a cpd. which is more reactive with O2 than the disulphide, esp. graphite. A substantial increase in die life.
