Abstract

The ladle is fitted on its base with a bottom-pour stopper ending in an outlet nozzle; and the bore of the nozzle contains at least one groove. The top end of the casting pipe is placed in the nozzle, and then a refractory sealing cement is injected into the groove to form a gastight seal between the nozzle and the pipe. In one pref. design, the bore of the nozzle has several ring grooves surrounding the top end of the casting pipe; and a jig arm is used to hold the pipe is place during the injection of the cement and also during a casting operation, the heat from which causes the cement to harden and set. A completely gastight seal is obtd. between the pipe and the nozzle so no air can reach the molten metal flowing from the ladle into the tundish.
